Newbie Queries | Cross-Comparison with CFE and AMP

I almost bought an Pioneer AVIC-Z2 because I thought that would be the best all-in-one media solution. After stumbling upon your very interesting community and forums, I am now sold on the concept of a Intel Mac mini carputer. This actually makes the most since Mac is so integrated into my life. Home, work, workstations, xserves, iphone, ipod.. etc.

I have a couple initial questions if someone has the time, please forgive my lack of programming knowledge:

    1. Where would I be able to aquire the plugins that have been developed for CFE thus far?

    2. What are the differences between AMP and CFE? I see that AMP is no longer being developed.

    3. Was Kindling ever released as and installer? Could someone point me in the right direction for comparision?

    4. I know that there is various software for iPhone is there any means of doing handsfree calling integrated with a mac carputer?

    5. Is there any GOOD mac native app for navigation. The best in my limited searching seems to be RouteBuddy, and that one appears to be sadly lacking in interface and esthetics. Also, what hardware works the best with this?

    6. If there is not a good mac app, is iGuidance on the pc the best PC app. For the navigation only, I am willing to run on XP in parallels. ONLY if it is necessary. I really would prefer a native Mac app.

    7. What is the best option for an permanent internet connection besides WiFi swinging.

    8. I have a 350z with a GIANT area of console to slice and dice for a screen. Does anyone know of or have experience with larger touchscreens than 7-8"? What is the largest you know of?

Thanks for your patience, expertise and time. Any input is welcomed.

    We all start somewhere

First of all, the main difference between the two is that CFE is currently supported and under active development while AMP has been abandoned. QCar is the only other active Mac FE at this time. Even still, hopefully i've answered your questions below.

    1. Where would I be able to aquire the plugins that have been developed for CFE thus far?
To the best of my knowledge, there are no plugins (besides the iTunes controller that comes with it) publicly available at this time. A couple of people have talked about making some, but as yet nothing has come out. I've been focused on the App itself, so I haven't had time to work on any either.

    2. What are the differences between AMP and CFE? I see that AMP is no longer being developed.
That is the big one. The other is the basic architecture. I liked the look of feel of AMP, but adding new features was a very painful process. I also didn't like how everything was built into AMP as it meant there was more installed than I wanted (I believe in a minimalist approach to application design).

    5. Is there any GOOD mac native app for navigation. The best in my limited searching seems to be RouteBuddy, and that one appears to be sadly lacking in interface and esthetics. Also, what hardware works the best with this?
I would say QCar is the most promising in this regard. They still don't have Nav finished yet, but from what Jirka has shown us so far it is the only one that is truly integrated with a FE that makes it easy to use.

    8. I have a 350z with a GIANT area of console to slice and dice for a screen. Does anyone know of or have experience with larger touchscreens than 7-8"? What is the largest you know of?
Poke around the LCD and worklogs forums. 10" and 12" LCDs are not uncommon and I believe one person has a 15" IIRC.

Thanks for the quick reply iamgnat. I appreciate it...

Well here we go, I decided to go for the monitor and was considering the lilliput 10.4" checking prices on the web, ebay, and craigslist. THEN, I noticed thepunkerguy's awesome post on another 10.4 inch: GREAT DEAL: 10.4" Touchscreen - Samsung LCD $215!
It appears as though many people have bought these and are VERY satisfied, for less money and without the overheating/shutdown problems that the lilliput has. I found it on ebay for $207. It is available on a website for $214 here!:

Now on to stalking the intel mini on ebay. I already own parallels (for iGuidance).
