1 TB in a car... for my mac...

I have made this object for my carputer.
    Is a 1TB Raid0 with 2x 500 GB SATA 3,5" and one interface SATA-FireWire 800 from SQP.

The needed voltage of +5V and +12V for the drives and the +12V for the audio interface RME FireFace400 are drained from an inverted for carPC. The M2-ATX-01 da 160W from mini-box.com.

It is an excellent inverted with many feature in the power-up/power-down sequence. Features that are ininfluent for me. I need only the power on when switch on the car....
    Awewhere i have use this:

SwitchOn => wait 5 seconds than switch on the power.
SwitchOff => wait 5 secondi and then send the off signal to the mainboard (not used in this project), after 45 seconds the inverter go Off

Because the 5 seconds of delay at powerOn, i have modified the delay from the sleep at my iBookCarPuter. From zero second to 6 seconds..

The inverter is with nocase. For my project i have preferred put them in a alluminium case to prevent EMI emission at all my audio equipment..

    I used a Teko cabinet n. 398 for RF experiments. The external dimensions are 222 x 76 x 36 (mm).
It was fully sealed for prevent vibration with my subwoofer and for the I/O i have use military connector.

    Now the photos:

Here the connectors. Right the Power out, left the Power in..

For the internal cable i have decided for soldering directly the wire.
This is the right choice for avoid future problem.

This is the final aspect of the inverter. Anonimous case, but great reliability.

Now the cable to the raid system..

Now the case of the SQP electronic raid.
It was made from a plastic box. This box go in a place out of my eyes. No need a beautiful work of cosmetic aspect...

For the 2 drives i have used the structure from a Apple G5 alluminium case.
It's a good structure, easy removing drive and very little space used.. Fantastic.
The structure with the 2 drives go to a spring plane, to avoid problem with great vibrations.

The drives are along from the raid box because spring plane and future fans are under construction..

2x Sata cable of 1mt lenght are used for the signal and the equivalent for the power.

The SQP raid have 1 FW400 port, 2x FW800 ports and 1 USB2 port. The USB2 port is unused. The other ports work fine for me to obtain a little FW Hub.

This is the drives assembly.. you can see the use of thermo shrinking girdle...

    All the objects togheter..

Raid box close and power cord to the inverter..

The total current at 12V drained from the power supply is 1,7A with the 2 drives on, according to the power supply indicators..

Final wiring of the power cord. The little 2 pole connector is for the power cord of RME FireFace400

Another photos of the tree objects.

This is the wire for power in from the car...

    End of the work...

    Sorry for my terrible english...

This is beautiful work. But why do you need 1TB and why not use a commercial inverter? Less than 2 amps of power would be easy to tap off of a Carnetix 1900 secondary supply or point of load device.

    Hi Bugbyte
because carnetix has 5V and 12V with a small current.
Is not a good inverter for this voltage. Carnetix is born for supply 15-19V as main power out.
With this inverter, i have 12V and 5V for many future use..
A little commercial inverter (12-220V) have many problem in stability when i start the car...

1TB is needed for store my mp3 library (380 GB), my film collection (240 GB an so on..), for noncompressed audio for high fidelity listening (audio race) and for harddisk recording with program as Logic Audio and Ableton Live....

I think you definately have the award for most storage in a CarPC. Or rather CarMac.

Okay, no problem. It's just that the Carnetix 2140 will output 3 amps at 12V and you are only drawing 1.7. Seems like it would work for you.

    Mhmm...
The start-up sequence (in current domain, measured from the 12V main battery power) of the raid subset tell me that at 0 moment (powerup the supply) i have 0.5A of idle current, then after 1 second i have the spin up of the first disk drive. In this moment the total current drained is 2,4A, just for 2,5 seconds. When disk1 is running at right spin the current drop to 1,2A. After another 0,5 second, the second disk drive spin up. In this moment i have another peak of current of 3,2A and then after 2,5 seconds, the current drop to 1,7A.
But this is the total current drained. There is some unknow value that i don't know, because i haven't test. The Audio card, for example... they draw current from the inverter supply, then the total current raise up from 1,7A and relative start-up peak current. Another object that i will mount in my car is the Elgato EyeTV 410, to change the my actual USB Elgato Diversity, too high processor cycle needed. The 410 work with 12V that i can draw from the same inverter.
When all the object are mounted in car, then i can test all. But, in any case, i have most power reserve than needed.
This is good for mantain the inverter quiet and cold, without fans, other than the fans of the disk drive structure.
The fans are 24V nominal. I use this fans, because in normal mode (low temps) i use the 12V for slow and silent cooling. When the temperature raise to bad value, i switch the fans from "+12V => Ground" at "+12V => -12V". In this case the fans go to maximum speed...
The -12V are supplyed from the same inverter..
More complicated to tell than to made..
