Thread: New *SIMPLE* proposed OS X front end, looking for coders

I think volunteers would want to know what exactly it is you want. Honestly I wouldn't get your hopes up since nobody seems to have even stepped in to keep AMP up to date.

Maybe the fact that you offer money helps the situation, but for a programmer $50 isn't alot of money for something that will likely take days or more. I know that depends on what you are looking for but if all you want is simple why not use CFE? I'll be happy to offer advice and pointers and whatnot but like anyone else I need more information.

Actually as far as I remember somebody did try to keep AMP up to date. But it was such a mess (forgive me) that he decided to create something of his own. Now we have "CarFrontEnd".

That's a lot of coding for $50. It may sound simple, but there's weeks of programming effort in that document -at a minimum.

i can second that. it doenst matter how simple you want the app to be, features always tend to creep up on you. what was originally was a simple app turns into a beast of project that often ends up as vapor ware.

the good news is that there is a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum that dont mind handing out advice. I would suggest buy a programming book, and tap into the wealth of knowledge here and build yourself something that you can be proud of, that is exactly to your own spec.

either way you go at it i wish you good luck, we can all use more choices here on the osx side of things.

yeah do what natedawgg suggests. Mac programming is kind of sickeningly easy once you wrap you head around objective c. I used to code in C++ now going back to it is painful for me. like he said we are here and can help advise but as far as development all the devs seem to be planted pretty firmly in their own FE camps.

AMP is dead for a reason. The developer is gone and the code does not lend itself to easy expansion and maintenance.

Actually CFE came about for completely different reasons. And I never tried to maintain AMP. I worked with Bobby early on in his development until we reached an impasse over some differences of opinion (this was also about the time he ****ed off and got banned from the Cocoa-Dev mailing list).

And for someone that never coded before in his life, it's actually not bad (i've seen far worse from "professionals". The problem is that his (naturally due to lack of experience) architecture has some limiting issues.

I didn't read the docs, but $50 is maybe 3 hours for a entry level programmer, 1 or 2 for one that has some experience.

AMP is a perfect example of this actually. Bobby is/was a med student that had no programming experience before he started AMP. Sure there are things that a professional with over a decade of experience would do differently, but the point is that he was able to put out something that made (and still does) it's users happy.

I for one would gladly jump in another FE's camp (or welcome developers to CFE), the problem is that while we have fair pockets of users with similar tastes we only seem to have one developer per taste group

Speaking of development, anyone else going to WWDC this year?

im with dave on this one. while i am currently in development on my own FE i am def not opposed to helping out on others. it would be awesome to have one end all FE but the fact is that everybody has different tastes and wants different features, and no one FE (at least not here in the near future) will be able to answer all the functions and features that EVERYBODY wants. so the best solution (the one that i am following) is build a FE that does what you want, and hopefully fill in the gaps of the users that want your features.
