    Seven hours is long enough to figure it out!

    If you're curious, run temperature monitor on it. It only gives you the SMART disk temperature, but that's a good proxy. I've found that if it gets much over 130 F you will get a shutdown.

    I would like to fit it somewhere behind the dash, and I can only do that without the case.

    i would think the mini would prob run a lot cooler without the case. the only problem i could see would be leaving the internals open to the elements, but im sure it would all work just fine.

    the bottom of the mini board has a chip that is cooled by the metal plate its mounted to. the drives are also to remain in their stacked positions as thats how they connect to the mini. you will probably not get it much smaller than it already is.
