Garmin + Intel Mac = crap

Seriously. I'm getting one of those 'Windows' headaches caused by the getting nowhere, grasping at straws, probably pointless repeated attempts to achieve something that should be but simple but isn't. You know? One of those 'messed with it all night, gave up twice, gonna try it one more time but probably shouldn't' frustration migraines? I haven't had one of these since I switched to Mac many moons ago. Thanks for reminding me why I don't mess with PC crap Garmin.

While it worked once, the Garmin GPS 10 no longer communicates with my mini. I've tried everything conceivable. The culprit? A mac bluetooth keyboard. The Mac still sees the Garmin - but it just won't play nice no matter what I do.

Garmin tech support: pointless and non-existent.

Anyway, the point of this post; for those planning on using an Intel Mini - if there's an alternative to the Garmin bluetooth receiver - use it.

it is not a PC's problem that you bought a crap product and it wont work because of conflicts with a mac keyboard and apple devices are notorious for not following standards anyways.

That is probably true, but there is no specific reason for conflict given. Apple may or may not be following standards same as garmin. standards compliance is an issue for both PC and Mac and both Apple and MS (Internet explorer?). We all need to learn from linux (from what i am told anyway)

Anyhow, who is to say wether or not another bluetooth device would cause the same headache. I think the biggest problem is the complete lack of support from anybody.

It been my exp that a lot of "windows headaches" happen when running windows on a mac, even in Boot Camp. If people want to run windows exclusively (I can't imagine people wanting a dual boot machine in a car) get a PC that is designed for what you want to do.

Personally I wouldn't wish a PC on my worst enemy. Not to mention, I don't need a PC. I just want a GPS receiver that works with Mac.

Honestly if the only way to have working GPS in my car is to use Windows, I'll learn to live without it.

But narrowing the cause usually leads to an apple product. For instance, the same GPS recevier works on computers without the mac keyboard. The mac keyboard on other computers, causes other bluetooth products not to work. Now the thing is, neither was designed to be on the other(mac keyboard on a pc and gps on osx), so it is not a big deal, but to blame the device that does follow standards, for the fault of the one that doesnt, is bad practice.

And that is pure ignorance. I use OSX 10.5 on my PC, and I use XP/Vista (and linux distros) and all are stable operating systems. There are just as many faults on any OS, and they dont happen often. If you actually have the same mindset as the mac vs. pc commercials I feel very sorry you and your ignorance.

I figured it out. It's not Mac, it's Garmin's software. Got it working, in Parallels, full-screen so - thanks to 'spaces' and coherence - the multi-platform thing isn't a problem.

As for the Mac/PC thing; I spent a decade+ using PCs. I will never go back. The 'ignorance' insults aren't true - I don't like PC's because of experience. Occasionally Mac will have a hiccup but compared to the alternative I don't mind so much.
