NeonDev-from what I have worked out (note I do not have the iPhones yet) I beleive that the iphone originally was unable to output video, until the v.2.0 software update, and it is through the dock connector.

You bring up a good point about the crashing, I had not even considered it. Is it that bad? I am a 'tweaker' so I will constantly be playing with settings, installing/uninstalling apps hacks etc, here i was thinking (2k1 this is for you ;-) it is a mac product so it would just work and never crash....wink wink.

I know the phones are expensive, I just want to be clear here, my wife an I will be getting them anyway, not only for the car set up, so it will be cheaper then getting dedicated hardware and custom installing etc.

So does anyone have any recommendations for an amazing cradle/charger, audio/video output, non bluetooth handsfree car kit?

yes it is that bad. my phone will spontaneously reboot or exit to the home screen quite frequently while using applications. even rebooted once during a call. I can say with absolute certainty that it is the most unstable finicky OS since the classic mac OS (ah the days when I hated macs). It is also known that the more applications you have installed the more unstable it gets so that explains why I have alot of issues while others have none.

steve has promised that 2.1 software update out tomorrow will completely solve this instability, but we will see.

i am still against the idea of using the iphone as the backbone of the carputer but it can be done as demonstrated here This guy obviously has lots of money to throw at the system which is why he was able to get it all working. good luck on replicating

yes I saw that corvette guy's set up, not quite what I am looking for because the screen is so far away and requires you to take your eyes off the road for a bit too long IMO. my ciggy adapter is in a really weird spot, in fact when I saw it I thought it was the stupiest place in the whole car to put it but after a bit of thought it will work out perfect for me (if this iphone idea come to fruition) because it is basically just behind the steering wheel so with one of those 'gooseneck' cradles it will bring it up to almost the same place as the current stereo (or where a 7in' touch screen would go)

Yes we will see if the 2.1 release tomorrow will help. Neon Dev I would love to hear your thoughts on the 2.1 and if it does significantly help with the crashing

    cheers

so it does appear as tho 2.1 has solved the crashing/rebooting issues. I have only had one reboot since moving to 2.1 and it was a known issue with winterboard on a jailbroken phone

And as for being a good solution to a tight budget, only so if you already have them. But for the price of a phone, you can get a normal PC. For the price of 2 you can get a whole CarPC with screen.

Having owned every MAJOR cell phone in the past decade, I can truly say I think the iphone is by far the best phone I have owned. I think your anti Apple Bias shows it's true colors in your post...(By the way,are you trying to tell me that Microsoft invented the GUI?) but maybe that is just me. Having owned Apple computers since the days of the RadioShack TRS-80, and commodore 64, I am pleased with the progression of Apple. On to the phone debate. The Treo 600 crashed more and locked up more than my Iphone ever has, in comes Treo 650...Ever try surfing the web on a treo, I didn't think so... What about watching a movie...Blackberry, blah, blah, blah... I will take my mp3 player in the iphone any day over the blackberry. Sony Ericson, Bluetooth, to Razor, all the same, not really anything different. I can tell you I absolutely love the Iphone, and have recently purchased the G3 version, with the "crappy" GPS as you call it. Good thing Tom Tom, does not think the GPS hardware is crappy, but we shall see what comes out as the financial war with At&t unfolds. As for the 2.1 update, solid thus far.

I have owned a Palm Treo and many HTC (windows mobile based) phones, and I have had very few crashes. Only time it did constantly is with a very low battery (like 5% left) and you try to make a phone call, it will restart itself, but solution is charge it more than once a week! Also I use web browsing on my phones all the time. I did browse with the treo and I do with my HTC. I could view javascript and flash enabled pages. Try that with your iphone. Also I could use FireFox mobile, or PIE, or hack PIE to send header info as IE6 to get full versions. Try that with your iphone and this was over 4 years ago.

I said nothing about Microsoft inventing the GUI, but since you bring it up, Apple did NOT event the GUI either. Jobs stole that from Xerox, which Microsoft inturn stole from Jobs. So wrong again.

I also watch movies on my phone in the airport and such. It comes with windows media player. I can watch divx/xvid/avi and play mp3 and everything copy protected or not. Also I can stream sirius radio through my phone. Iphone? No.

Also I can install 1 of thousands of programs mostly for free to play any movie, any game, any theme, anything. Iphone? You get the app store. yeah...

Also the Tom Tom software for the iPhone that will supposedly make the iphone great, is NOT part of the iphone... It is an app. I can run iGuidance OR Microsoft Streets and Trips or a bunch of other things. iPhone? Nope. You're locked down.

And what is so new about the iphone? You mention the Razr and other phone manufacturers... Name anything on the phone, and I will show you how Apple did not invent it. Capacitive touch screens? Been around for ages. Multi-touch displays? Been around for years, just not used. Only thing "good" about the iphone is running a good OS on it. But you are locked down, so it defeats the purpose of running a general purpose OS.

So again, how is the iPhone so great?

Sigh....... who doesn't know about the Apple purchase and the GUI from Xerox? Do you know how much Apple paid for it, I do. Next topic, you keep your treo, ROFL at you, whatever, I will stick to having an iphone
. For the life of me I can't figure why you have so many unproductive post (almost 8k), but after reading your last 2 I know why. Why don't you try and post something useful, if you can...... Anyway thanks for contributing to the Mac Community and the topic of having an iphone as a car computer... Don't let the door hit you on the way out

"issues: Tiny screen, Horrible GPS, Non Expandable, Low Storage"

Largest screen for a cell phone that I can recall (3.5 inches (diagonal)
Screen resolution 480 by 320 pixels (163 ppi)), GPS hardware is fine, actually it is the software that is in development and bidding war with AT&T (google is your friend), non Expandable, hmmn it is an ipod with a phone attached, Low Storage, 16 gigs, is enough to play how many songs....? I bet it holds more than a 12 Disc CD changer right? What about a 12 Disc DVD changer in addition to the CD changer? I bet the phone still holds more video and music than a 24 Disc car stereo
