    maccar

so i've been glancing around checking everything out, and pretty much everything i see so far either requires, leopard, intel mac, or both.

what is out there that supports lesser osx, like 10.4(tiger), and lesser hardware, like a g4. i'm all about macs, and am wanting to do a setup in my car, using my laptop, but i see no reason to upgrade to something new when my old g4 does it all for me, from movies, to music, to games.

every front end i know here runs on both PPC and intel. you are correct that several require leopard. I suggest simply upgrading to leopard since "snow leopard" probably won't support PPC machines.

the main reason for that suggestion is that the only front ends currently under active development require leopard or later, but all support PPC.

of course you dont NEED a front end. you can always use itunes/front row...

what i have now is a TiBook, g4 800mhz with 512mb ram (upgrading to 1gb soon) and it handles WoW and my movies and music and obviously net. leopard dont run too quick on something that old.

i'm planning on makin a sort of a dock that i can just slide the laptop into, as i am inseperable from the laptop (just ask my boss) and have no need to upgrade (yes it would be nice, but i have the TiBook and access to an eMac). so i am looking for something that would work in tiger.

the dock would be a sleeve under the seat of my tbird that fits the laptop, and i would make a dongle of sorts with the male end of all the back panel connectors that would clip on the back panel, so all i do is clip on the back panel plug in the audio jack and slide it into the sleeve and go. like a 10 second chore and off i go.

i plan to get a griffin powermate for the center console to control things like volume, and get a screen (obviously) in the dash for the rest. i have no plans for a head unit, just amps, speakes and a sub (no need for multiple, you can do plenty with the right single...). the touch screen, powermate, and whatever else would all be run through the dongle into the back connectors on teh laptop (and side audio jack too lol).

i just need software compatible with tiger. yes i could just run the normal software, like itunes (as much as i hate it), vlc, etc. but i'd like to just open a frontend, close the laptop and go

Just run Front Row. You need Leopard for most of the FE's.

hmmm....seems front row REQUIRES a mac with ir.....from what i've seen in a screenshot, amp looks like it is based off of front row, and i found that to work a little while ago. amp will prolly do it for me then.

AMP is probably your best bet. esp if you hate itunes since CFE requires iTunes.

also I know there are ways of getting front row to run without an IR port and apple remote

AMP and carfrontend work pretty good for me on a ppc mini without ir (using a small touchscreen), AMP takes up lots more resources to run though.
lately I've found that just making aliases to the desktop with big icons for other programs outside the range limits of those work well for me. I also use a wacom pen for the small menus. simple solution, i know, but it works for now. personally, I hate alot of things about Leopard. I use 10.5 for work, but need a backup tiger laptop because peripherals and lots of software simply don't work or work incorrectly with leopard.
