    Long standing sleep/wake issue solved?

    Hey all,
Since pretty much day one i've had random issues with coming out to my car and finding the Mini off. I've double checked my P1900 settings and verified my battery. All is good and the only USB that is normally connected is the touch screen, though this is run through a powered USB interface that is off when the car is off.

A couple of times I have looked at console and never been quite sure what to make of it as it says a USB event caused the wake. I've chalked it up to my power interrupt for the TS not being as effective as I thought, but I can now rule that out.

I haven't put it back in the car since my security system mishap, so I plugged it into my router in the laundry room so I could do some long needed updates and maintenance to it this weekend. I did most of that yesterday via ARD and put it to sleep. I just went downstairs to find it awake and when I came back up stairs and logged in via ARD, it said a USB event woke it. Not so strange I suppose, until I mention that the only connections it currently has plugged in are the Ethernet and power. No USB, not FW, nothing else.

I'm guessing this is what my real issue in the car is (wakes itself up, then the P1900 kills it after 3 minutes).

Anyone else seen anything like this? I want to take it in for AppleCare service, but it's so inconsistent that i'm not sure it's worthwhile.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    -dave

    Edit:
Here is a pic of the Mini as it was awoken by it's mystery USB device...

my guess is that perhaps the ethernet is attached to the motherboard via USB. kinda like the macbook air...

Nope, ethernet shouldn't be. Apparently the BlueTooth module is on an internal USB bus though.

I've disabled it to see if that has any effect since I don't use it (keyboard) that often. Would be nice if it was a bit more predictable so that I could be sure if there was an effect or not.

yeah just open system profiler and see what it says about attached usb devices (if any)
if there aren't any "attached" and it still does it and says it is from a USB even then perhaps some sort of power surge is causing it to wake. I have that problem with my g5, when my refrigerator compressor comes on the G5 wakes up everytime.

My G4 won't stay asleep, so maybe this a long standing problem.

I could see that as an issue in the house, but that *shouldn't* be an issue in the car behind the P1900 as it should be cleaning the power.

Have you looked at your console messages to see what caused it to wake?

According to my informants (ex-Apple emps), the Mini has always had it's BT module on the internal USB bus and has had issues with randomly waking the system.

The IR receiver also sits on the internal USB. You can try to deactivate it by temporarily removing the corresponding kext. You can do the same for the Bluetooth module if you do not use it. Since it should be possible to load and unload kexts dynamically, you can try to do this in your software before sleep and after wake-up.

BTW: I am not experiencing these problems with my Intel mini at all.

The Bluetooth options have a checkbox for "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" under the Advanced button in System Preferences > Bluetooth. I disabled this option on my carputer since I didn't want an inadvertent mouse or keyboard input to wake the computer when the car was turned off. Check your prefs and Console logs to see if this might be the problem.
Any day is a good day for golf.
