contimplating the pc to mac switch some questions

Well currently in my truck i am using a Dell XPS 20lb pain in my *** with roadrunner front end. it handles my ever growing *currently 2tb* of music / movies & the gps however i could never get any of my phones to work correctly to provide internet or alow the pc to control calls in/out

I purchased an iPhone 3G about a month ago and love it so a few days ago i purchased an iBook G4 1.2ghz 1GB ram 100GB HD with an Airport card. its running 10.5 pretty well i think but im sure not as beefy as a macbook but hey were not all rich, anyhow the questions

what front ends are still in production? ICE3 looked nice but so far they are all pretty shy on features compared to roadrunner

will i be able to sync my iPhone to the iBook and use tethering for internet easily enough and is there anything that will control the phone i.e. phone calls through the pc?

GPS software? 10.4" touchscreen friendly or integrability to what mac front end?

i will have to see if there is any drivers for my usb deluo gps for mac but if i got to buy a new one so be it any suggestions on brand?

or all in all should i keep the pc in place maby trim it down to a atom size pc and integrate a slot loader combo drive under the 10.4" lcd?

i have considered a mac mini but for now a laptop is fine and if i like what i can do then i will buy a mini for under my seat

well congratulations on getting a mac they are far better

ICE3 is the primary front end in crrent development. NASAIR is being updated on occassion as well.

yes you will be able to sync your phone and use it to tehter easily enough if you jailbreak your phone. There are severl VNC programs on the App Store or Cydia to control parts of the PC

There is no GPS software for the mac that is reliable enough to use like roadrunner

If you need it to work like road runner you might want to stick with Road Runner because there is nothing even consierably close to it for OSX.

I would recomend the mac mini, I had one in my car and the all inclusive and small foot print is great. The new one has enough on board USB ports to power almost everything with no hubs. The laptop that you have should work fine, I think that ICE3 is able to run on non intel machines.

    Good Luck.
Cant code cause I dont know how, but give me the paint bucket and my eraser and have at you!

    1. Take a look in our mobile mesh forum. There's a how-to for tethering your iPhone. It does require that you jailbreak it to do so.

    2. For GPS, use a Windows based GPS program and run it in either Parallels or Fusion. You can use spaces to switch between the two. Also, NASAir by Natedawgg has a neat solution for making the windows version appear embedded in the front end. There's some discussion on that here.

Can you run Parrallels or Fusion if the system is not intel? If you use your laptop that has G4 processor I dont think that you would be able to use them.

jailbreak huh? i have heard good and bad things about jailbreak but i dont really care much to control the pc from the phone but to control the phone with the pc. i am using mocha vnc right now but i only use that to remote to my server @ the store to start downloads when nobody is there

route buddy i saw to be a gps software but im assuming thats what you were talking about not working as well as windows based software like iGuidance that i use with roadrunner

i will check out that jailbreak idea for tehter. if i jailbreak the phone will i loose features or possibly mess with my OS integrity?

jailbreaking your iphone shouldn't have any adverse affects on your iphone. and you will do nothing but gain functionality. there is always there rare chance that something could go wrong, but chances are very good that it won't. i have been running my jailbroken iphone for over a year now (both on old edge iphone, and now 3g iphone) with absolutely no problems whatsoever. in the event you need service on your iphone or run into some compatibility issue with it, you can always just do a restore in itunes and it will set it back to a factory state.

at the risk of starting to sound preachy, i prefer virtualbox. there is nothing wrong with parrallels or fusion ( i use fusion at work) but virtualbox is free plain and simple. for me that makes it leaps and bounds better than the other two. it works just as well and handles windows/gps solution great in the car.

Also, NASAir by Natedawgg has a neat solution for making the windows version appear embedded in the front end. There's some discussion on that here.

UPDATE: just so everybody knows, this feature is now available!

other than that good luck with the new mac.
