    New AppleTV released tomorrow

    Hey guys!

Current rumors are saying that a new Apple TV may be released tomorrow. People are guessing it will run iOS and apps. Hopefully that is true. It could change everything for in-car entertainment!

Honestly, I'm out of the car game. I'm into sailboats now and I'm looking at options. They have to be very "low power consumption" options. I'm hoping the new AppleTV will somehow serve as a fantastic media center type thing. The current AppleTV already does, but a new one would be very welcome!

    Its not iOS.

    It sucks.

Bring on the reasons why it doesnt...I dont care...it doesnt replace a Plex capable Mac Mini nor does it work in a car from how it shows itself.

    I completely agree with you.

I was hoping it would have iOS, storage, and run apps. It has none of that. The only reason I use my current Apple TV is to rent movies and play crap that I download from torrents. All the new Apple TV does is make it a little more difficult to do ... (ie, having to have iTunes open, computer open, etc, to stream from my computer, since there is no storage!)

For an entertainment room application, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a Boxee box. You're 100% right about Plex / MacMini being the best option right now.

I can't figure this thing out!
Like heck is it supposed to do ???

I keep waiting for a blog or something to explain why apple did this to appleTV.
However, I have a feeling that the size is a hint to what it is going to do!
I was thinking that maybe Apple is going to try to have this embedded in TVs.
Much like a graphics card but a unit that would allow drm checking and all that other fun stuff.

Or is there something else to what they are going to do with this unit?

i just finished reading the article in the business section of the tribune on this..

apple is almost strong-arming (i get the feeling it is "apples way or the highway") to mark the tv shows down to 99 cents ea. the article also talks about how that could adversely affect the cost of tv shows, because it is undercutting sales from things like season dvd's..

they also mention that apple rolled out a new itunes with "Ping"--something that sounds vaguely familiar to a music based twitter/facebook...

though i think the new nano is a cute-- and electronics shouldn't be cute(imo)--but it has a tiny multi-touch screen, and fm radio makes it nicer then previous models...(i think all mp3 players should include a fm radio..)

I forgot to write but for some reason the appleTV in some ways reminds me of a sheeva plug.

The BIG question is going to be ... home much will a JB allow.

i guess a better question is weather or not appletv is worth the effort when it seems like there is a high chance that there might not be that many tv companies want to provide media for it..

and with no onboard storage, you can't even record/save video on it

it also looks like it is only hdmi/toslink out, so that makes it even tougher to connect...

honestly, i would probably prefer to spend a little more to get a netbook, or one of those atom-based desktops, and hook it up to my tv.. it can still stream video, and as a bonus, i can store media on it...

I'm currently in the middle of setting up an Atom based install in my Miata, but this recent jailbreak of the new AppleTV has me thinking. Because my car is so small, an AppleTV would be perfect to display media in the car. As it's actually IOS, it may be possible to implement touchscreen, or maybe just a mouse. Having software like Plex available makes this a very attractive solution for me! If the jailbreak community puts together the right software stack, I think this may become a cheap small carpc solution!
