Thread: Apple Tv in car Project started

DC converter on the way from sparkfun, I was going to make it internal, but I'd have to remove the AC / DC converter completely to do that... For now I like being able to use the Apple TV in my house as well. Makes it easier to install software etc. I jailbroke mine, installed ATV Flash black, and xbmc. Works great, plays anything.

Did anyone get further with the Apple tv 2 power issue, can it be made to run off 12v or not

I sure it can be powered using a fuse. Or alternatively you can run it off a power inverter (I have it hardwired) and then on/off switch. But the problem is atv2 is HDMI interface to the vga screens in our car. You need to get some kind of converter.

Thanks for that i was really looking to having the AC to Dc power supply in the ATV 2 removed, and hardwired in to the 12v system but from what i am led to believe its 3.4volts and 1.5 amps i think, i know there are some genius guys on here that could make a dc to dc dropper, anyone any ideas?

As regards screens, i have just bought from Comet, a 16" WIDESCREEN LCD/LED HDMI TV with record function through USB, For £89 that runs off 12volts through an AC power adapter and draws only 40watts when in use

Can anyone give me the pinouts on the ATV2 to connect the molex connector to? THere are a lot more than 2 wires coming from the power supply.

Apple TV2 can be run in car with any display that supports HDMI. You can run airplay by using a portable usb router (dlink makes a good one) and to answer the question above I think the molex is just the positive/negative. You can solder the pins and used molex for power. Atv2 uses very little power, should be more than enough for the itx-mobo inside our carpc.

I could update the thread a little as well, Mine worked fine off 12v, with a tiny little converter from sparkfun. Apple tv works great in my house, total nightmare in the car.

SOMEONE PLEASE RELEASE AN AIRPLAY VIDEO RECEIVER!!!

New iphone 5 won't even support video out by cable, so the system I went to is obsolete again. I just want airplay mirroring to whatever indash screen I have. Why is that too much to ask

Been eyeballing this thread back and forth, considering installing an ATV1 or 2 in my car.

Anyway, for AirPlay mirroring, there's a desktop app called AirServer that supports it. Since the ATV1 firmware is really a stripped down OS X, it may be possible to modify it enough (adding kernel extensions perhaps?) to get the app to run on it. Checking their website, it does say that it runs on Tiger, and that's the base OS for ATV1.

I just signed up purely to post about Airplay mirroring without having a wireless router involved.

Using an Apple TV Gen 3 (5.0.2) un-modded I simply connected to my iPhone 4s (5.1.1) which had 'Personal Hotspot' enabled.

Desktop and all apps can be mirrored just as if connect via wireless router. This is a deal Maker for me and all I want is the ability to wirelessly play music and movies to my Car's existing AV system, but i didn't want to have a router in my car!

I'm not sure if this is a new thing with the Gen3 I will be getting hold of a Gen 1 and also testing.
