I'm wondering, If you are using AS to talk to the respective apps, (itunes, etc) are you going to generate GUI controls & feedback for them all within the frontend i.e. all the functions will be tied into the app you are developing? Or will you be using the interfaces of the respective apps? I was wondering how much of an eye you have towards extensiblitiy (adding different apps). I know some applescript if you need help, but nothing horribly complicated. Sounds like you all have it all under control. I have been looking for a project to learn Obj C/Cocoa...

You use Interface builder to make the GUI and then tie the pieces together using XCODE with Applescript. Interface builder and XCODE come free in the developer's tools with OS X.

    Ok,

So this iDash frontend will really just be a launcher? I was thinking of some sort of über-widget that would actually have iTunes controls, DVD playback controls, GPS stuff, etc. in its interface.

It would be cool to figure out a way to get apps like iTunes into some sort of full screen mode. Maybe edit the NIB somehow?

You're not getting it. That's what interface builder does. You build the new GUI - the full screen, DVD/iTunes/Email/XM controller screen with interface builder. When you click the buttons, they run Applescripts. The Applescripts tell the apps what to do and you never see them. It's all your GUI all the time.

    Like this.

I will, provided someone shows me some examples of a code that they already have. I am always up for a challenge, plus that what I do anyways I am a programmer myself, and may I say I love my job.

    any one have examples?

Only one problem, building your interface with Interface Builder makes an app that is to be used as normal on Mac OS X. In the car, you can not use the small controls that interface builder provides. You really need to create a skinning system or create custom controls that are much larger.

    Just my thoughts

I think this is within the capability of IB. I think a bigger issue will be grabbing all the feedback from the various apps and running them back through the skin/frontend. It's do-able with AS (i think) but I have to think if someone could do it in cocoa that would be better. I don't know cocoa btw. Just sayin is all. People use AS for stuff like this all the time with k-widgets. It would be nice to get a custom file browser beyond what IB gives you, (b/c of size issues) but then I think that gets pretty serious, and sort of beyond the scope of what you guy are talking about.

just double-checking, you guys do have applescripters already correct? If not i could help out. but like i siad this would probably be better-suited for straight cocoa...

Cocoa is better. Like Bitoholic says, you have more control over the interface with Cocoa than Applescript. However, you can make calls directly to Cocoa using Applescript, so you ought to be able to change some of the interface builder characteristics. But if you're going to do a lot of that, you probably ought to be using Cocoa.

I'm using Applescript for basic stuff because I'd have to learn both Objective-C AND Cocoa to do it the other way. One of these days I'll graduate to Cocoa.
