I was looking for a notebook to use for a install until the mac mini came out.The problem i found was the cost/performance issues. For some of the stuff i would like to eventually run the speeds you can get a laptop in for the same price as a mac mini arnt looking to good...I.E. i was bidding on a powerbook 15,with no screen,ram,hd,cdrom...just motherboard and such....800mhz,went for 380 on ebay.when you consider the mac mini's price, its hard to complain.Although the battery built into a notebook would solve a ton of problems.I wouldnt think a power supply on a mini mac would draw alot of power when in sleep mode? And being a diesel i have dual batterys,so i dont think draining the battery with 100-200mah draw will be an issue.Right now I'm having a hard time seeing the benifit of a battery and easy to get 12v powersupply for a laptop worth the price/performance difference.Ibook is pretty much out of the question for what i wanna do.

    Working on...

    Hi Everyone!

I'm just started (yesterday) coding an application in Cocoa for use in a MacCarPc. This will be built into my Acura RSX.

    Features of the program:
    - Mp3
    - DVD
    - Video
    - Phone (via bluetooth)
    - GPS (hopefully)
    - Radio

I'm not sure exactly how the sleep function will be triggered when the car is turned off. Success of the program will depend on both figuring out/finding a GPS system, and getting sleep to work without draining the car battery.

    cheers.

Heh umm..... I kinda started coding an app too this weekend in Applescript. It's called iDrive. I don't know if we should join forces or just keep our separate ways. I'd like some help on mine, since i'm new to developing on Apple, and with Applescript the learning curve is somewhat shallow so many can join in. I've already roughed out an interface, will post some pics in a second.

    iCrash haha

Seriously, though, to you app writers out there, please consider implementing your apps as extensions of existing and typical mac apps.. Ie if you are going to do a music player, do it through iTunes; if you are doing a photo viewer, do it through iPhoto; if you are doing a movie player do it through quicktime player... All of apple's apps are scriptable for a reason! Please take advantage of it. One of the most ridiculous things about all the various car-frontends for the PC's is how they all have to reinvent the wheel to do simple things like play MP3's. Part of this is because there isn't a consistantly accessible API to control any of the popular windows media *applications* but at any rate the result is the same -- forward progress is slow in these apps and they end up getting very complicated very quickly.

exactly why I'm using applescript! Its easy to work with, and, with Applescript Studio, easy for development n00bs for me to make cool apps for it. I don't feel that we need to make this with cocoa, since that adds a lot of complexity that we don't need.

yah, i just found that out this morning when i went to the local Mac store and was ****ed. the Powerbooks do when above 12". hell if i am going to pay that though :-( I'm going the IBook route for now and wait a while for the mac mini's to be ebayed cheap. if worse come to worse, i can always buy a less then 1Ghz powerbook to dedicate for the car for under $1k. right now i need something that can handle the car and development with.

my whole thing is to get a dash interface out there now. that is most critical...the rest will just fall into place after that and entice other users to join our cause:-)

What is wrong with your powerbook? Apple script is built into OS X
