Newb Jumps in with both feet first

    Hey,

I'm a newb to the carputer sceen. I didn't even know it exsited till a week ago. But wow what a following. I'm hooked and I don't even have a system yet. Here is my plan.

Short storie: I bought a new 2004 Nissan Titan LE KC 4x4. This is the family road trip truck. I didn't get the GPS, DVD, and Satallite radio options because 3800 bucks extra seemed like too much. Two days later I get a Mac Mall catalog and see a Mac Mini for the first time. Wow that thing is small. Then it hits me, "I could put that in the truck for entertainment!". I now have a Holux GR-231 GPS, and XMDirect XMPCR on order. I've found a Lilliput 809GL-80NP 8" touch screen that dose 800 x 600 native and I want to run it all with a MM.

I plan on running the MM with a power inverter and setting it up in the console well out of site. The MM will be set up with a combo drive, 512mb, Bluetooth, and Airport. The screen will be mounted at the same location that the factory unit would be. I hope to have this all set up by mid March. Total cost sould be <1500 with software.

If anybody had some words of wisdom to setting this system up I would appriciate feedback.

    Bill

The guy's brought a mac so don't even bother going down the pc road :P

By the time he has finished the whole install there should be a beta demo of the frontend software by them for mac.

Altho he does have a mac now he could help develop the mac frontend with some applescript

Sound like a good setup so far

Watch out for the MacMini car PSU from Carnetix

Yes there are lilliput and Xenarc drives for the Mac :P

The only thing thats made the mac not as good as PC is the frontend it has everything else including netstumbler :P so don't start things up here people

I think all he said was that he got the catalog and thought it was cool, not that he had bought one already.

For what he wants to do the Mac mini should be fine. GPS, MP3, Movies and emulators will all run on it and Lilliput does have drivers for the mac. The mac gps software, route 66, might not be the best- but it'll do the job from what I understand.

    just my $.02

The Mac Mini is on order with 512mb, Bluetooth and Airport. I HAVE the XMdirect PCR and it works very nicely on my PC. There is software on Sourceforge for a mac called MacXM. I just recieved the Holux gr-231 GPS units and the Lilliput 809GL-80NP is being shipped. I would not have bought the Lilliput if I did not first find the drivers for it. The same goes for the other units.

If you have a better program to suggest that won't break the bank let's hear it. That's why I posted. I'm only interested in what other peoples experiences are or leads to information. OPINIONS are fine but flametarts can take a hike.

A PSU from Carnetix is on the plan but for now an inverter is the only option. I have also purchased a Maxtor 250gb 16meg 7200rpm hard drive(99 bucks on sale at Comp USA) and mobile enclosure with a firewire port to act as an external media storage unit. I'm just waiting for the Mini then I'll set it all up in the house. Get all the drivers working and look for/make up some custom front end software. I'm new to Mac's but I've got a friend or two that have worked with them. We'll see what we come up with and I'll post it hear along with pics.

You'll need to keep the holux 231 handy.. it won't 'stay on' unless it's continuosly powered. You'll have to 'nudge' it every time you get into the truck. You may as well use it as a USB.GPS vs BT.GPS
