Does a better/diff monitor give better image?

I'm new to the car computer world, but somewhat computer literate. We installed a Pioneer AVIC2 right before I got bit by the bug. This past weekend, we added a Mac Mini to my truck, relying on the AVIC's screen for the display. While the install is just awesome (USB and firewire ports at three different locations, look like they were factory, a Junxion box installed in the bed of the truck, and a wifi transceiver in the console) the display sucks to put it mildly. Even with expanding the font size, you have to work at figuring out what's on the display. We've tried different resolutions to no avail.

I guess I just assumed the resolution would be like looking at an lcd computer monitor, only smaller.... Is this a common problem with car computers? A problem more prevalent with the mini? Is there a good monitor I can add to the mix that will be crystal clear?

My cousin has that HU in his G-wagen. It' s what really pushed me into installing a CarPC.

My first mistake was getting a plain old LCD monitor. I had completely forgotten how bad my desktop looked when I had it connected to my 27" 480i TV. I quickly remembered after plugging a 7" LCD monitor to my computer and the only thing that looked barely decent to view were movies. After that, I bought a Lilliput* with touchscreen and never looked back.

You need to get an LCD with VGA inputs. The AVIC has just a basic LCD TV with a touchscreen. 95% of the people here use either the Lilliput or Xenarc LCD.

*-Some of these monitors come under different names. I bought a Starvision branded LCD that looks identical to the Lilliput and has all of the same shortcomings, except that I haven't had any problems. Search the LCD forum and you'll find tons of posts concerning the good, bad and the ugly on these very important components of a CarPC.

P.S. He hasn't seen my setup yet, but I'm sure he'll quickly regret his $2000 purchase.

What he said. You are looking at the Mac Mini on the equivalent of a television. It is NOT VGA. A VGA monitor is much sharper, clearer, and readable with smaller fonts.
