    Steering wheel controls

I am trying to plan my whole carputer setup before I start. With that said I was wondering if I were to replace my headunit (radio) in my car and use a mac mini in its place, is there anyway to integrate the steering wheel controls or should I just kiss them goodbye?

not sure with the Mac but on a Windows based system you can hack up either a keyboard controller or a gamepad to interface your steering controls.

would you put the keyboard under the buttons on the steering wheel or would you some how splice them in to the wire coming from the buttons?

You can hack up a keyboard controller and solder the buttons to existing switches on your steering controls, but this may not be possible on the Mac, depends on how the Keyboard controller works.

The link below may help explain better:

I have a pac swix connector that reads what buttons I push on the steering wheel and the emits a remote signal. The swix has learning functionality and can learn all remote inputs. Is there any ir remotes for macs that this could possible work with?

    Get a Pac Swix controller

and then purchase the Keyspan IR media controller
    http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/remote/

and then program the Swix from the Keyspan remote and then setup the Swix to emit to the Keyspan IR reader connected the mac mini.

I believe an IPAC controller will also work, although it is a wired solution. It basically can take switches for inputs and emulates them as keypresses. They claim it is compatible with the Macintosh.

I once owned an IPAC, but never had a Mac to test it on.

I think you probably would want either the Express Remote or the Remote for iTunes

The Digital Media Remote doesn't work with your media player if it is in the background. Otherwise, yes, the SWIX and Keyspan combo should work. You also need to place the SWIX IR emitter and the Keyspan IR receiver where they have line-of-sight visibility to each other.
