    new frontend

I would like to make a new front end for Mac OSX but I do not own a mac myself. I would like to use the itunes api and develop one. I do have limited access to one(intel version and powerpc) but not long enough to do much. I have some experince with the windows itunes api and play around with audio and video in linux alot. Does anyone know of a way I can start experimenting without a Mac.

I'm not sure, but it looks kinds of difficult... I know you can put OSX Tiger on a G3 Mac, and those are fairly cheap to get...

Nope. You're gonna need a Mac to do the development on. I think there is an emulator called Pear PC but it's painfully slow and probably wouldn't be worth it.

BTW - If you don't own a Mac but plan on developing a front end, what do you intend to run it on? You gonna buy one eventually? Mac Mini's are running $499 new. You could get one of those.

although it will be possible to run osx on an intel box it s not going to be just a one-click and you are done kinda thing.I admit I do not know alot about the whole apple-intel plan but I kno theres still going to be apple hardware requiered. I would wait till it hits the market to see what you reely have to play with. though I do agree however that it might be a rather simple change in the kernel or something. my advice though, just wait.

    1. What is iTunes API? :-O AppleScript interface? The only official API for iTunes I know about is for developing the visualisers.
    2. Don't you think that a real front-end should be a bit more than just an alternate interface for iTunes?

There is a full itunes control set accessible via applescript, just look at salin clicker for mac Great bit of software.

Additionally, no, you wont be able to do much without a mac LOL. however you could perhaps grab realbasic as that makes cross platform code, but it may be a bugger to work with, they have just released a new version though.

Finally you could do what I did and get a free mac mini from one of those giveaway site things, they are essentially totally silent too, really cool! Can send you a link if you want one to start you off, however dont want to post in this forum with the ref link for obvious reasons LOL.

All in all there is already a mac interface being developed, why not go help those guys instead?

Anyone get the feeling every few weeks someone chimes in with :

"I want to make a Mac front end..."

not to be rude, but what the hell, I think we need all these enthusiastic people to get TOGETHER and work towards one (or 2 or 3?) projects, pooling resources, smarts and skills.

if we (apple users) are to ever get an MMC or Frodo going people who want to make front endS need to make a frontend (see no plural).

Just my opinion, and it seems best. Work together, not alone.

I understand your feeling, and semi-agree. That said, i'm working on my own frontend

I'm doing it because i'm just too picky to like any of the frontends i've seen (Mac, Win, or Linux) and i'm using it to learn more about Obj-C and Cocoa (I finally understand tables, well sorta as it's crashing my app ).
