You might be able to read the nmea data off your gps unit with this.

    yeah ^^

There is applescript stuff for reading xml formats as someone pointed out (imgnat maybe) earlier.

I might get a look at all this stuff this weekend and see how feasible it really is.

I already am running GPS connect on my mini.
It reads data just fine, but has no live export feature.
It also doesn't log NMEA data, it's more for import and export of waypoints.

    ------------

Here is a utility that can generate XML in applescript.

It may or may not be needed.

to be honest I think that sometimes creating xml is made more complicated than it really should be.

At work I've found that if the xml is not very nested and is a smaller file straight coding it can be easier than using a object model or specific xml API. Since this is a small file that will be fed constantly to another program speed is of the essence...the solution may be to write it as plain text.

I agree, I am going to simply try to use the Apple text editor to generate the KML, and just feed it the right data to the right feilds.

    Also this program supports Applescript.

I have the demo on the mini, I wonder if it also is applescript ready.

My basic layout for the script will be:
-Get required NMEA data from application
    -Is speed greater then zero?
-If so, pass values to text editor

In theory you can make both a live tracker, and provide all the relivant GPS data in a HTML pop-up or overlay.

I looked a bit at google earth. It doesn't look very scriptable at all. I think it might be better to use another, lower level language to do this.

You don't have to actually pass anything into google earth via AppleScript.
Just make a network linked KML file, it shouldn't be any harder then collecting the info and putting it into the proper place in the KML file.

Ok, the only shareware GPS program that seem applescript friendly is Terraserver.
But I haven't messed with it yet.
I don't want to pay $50 for a program that "might" work.
