I would've loved to test it out, but I don't have a anything in the way of a setup right now. All I have so far is the mini and some applescript writing to do. Kinda made a promise to someone that i'd have some working code before i bought a full setup.

i want to try running this but I am little confused as how this is differnt compared to like route 66. I am looking for gps software that will reroute and get me to my destination. I know there is nothing available for macs. On this setup using google earth, is google earth the map, while GPSNavX actually maps using the gps receiver? thanks.

Google earth won't re-route without a live internet connection. (Cell phone, EVDO, etc...)
I had a pre-planned route in mind and cached it before leaving.
Most all the surround road and info remained in cache, enough to know where gas is and stuff.

I am only use GPSNavX to get the GPS info, it has nothing to do with the mapping.
GPSNavX is made for people who have pre-made naval maps, it doesn't do roads.
I am working on getting the GPS info directly from the serial port.

This is a work in progress.

The optimal route problem isn't as difficult as it seems.

Its basically a maze solving problem. Look up some of the algorithms for that. I remember doing a school coding project thing on one a while back. And mapquest/yahoomaps/google will do this for you if you have an internet connection

Well zapwizard, I got out there and tested this today and I had a couple of problems.

First, GPSNavX doesn't automatically select my GPS unit. I have to go in and pick it out. Can you let me know where you learned to script GPSNavX?

Second, my angle variable would be empty until I started moving and this caused an applescript error when stripping the text. I changed,
    -Stri text from angle
set angle to characters 1 thru -6 of angle as string
    to
    -Strip text from angle
    if not angle = ""
set angle to characters 1 thru -6 of angle as string
    end if
Third, I am getting an error on
generate XML XMLFile saving as file "Macintosh HD:Users:Shared:GPS-XML.kml"
I forgot to record the text of the error so I'll get back to you on this one.

I am aware of the angle not working until you actually start moving.
I normally don't actualy press run on the script until I have traveled a bit.

I already did the fix you posted, but I hadn't posted it here.
If you get an error generating the XML, first make sure the XML parser is installed, and second make sure the path where the file is written exists.

sti_robot, the only problem is that Google Earth doesn't export out any data that I know of that you could use to do route solutions.
It is all done on google's servers and sent back to the user.
If you had a live network connection I suppose a script that automaticly requests the directions from your current GPS position to your destination would work, but that seems a bit much.

    Hi guys,

Im thinking of using Google earth on my PowerBook. I got GPSNavx and Google Earth installed and a NMEA GPS receiver. I was reading this thread and got kinda lost. Can you guys please tell me what else I need to start with? I understand, I have to use some sort of AppleScripts to get it fix.

Another thing is: GPSNavX is sometimes getting stuck on my 1.5 GHz/1GB (OS X 10.4.5) PowerBook but running okay on my 1st generation 876MHz/640MB (OS X 10.3.9) 12 PowerBook. Any idea why? Thanks in advance!!!

You will need XML Tools and an applescript like the one zapwizard posted on page three of this thread. You cut the posted script, paste it into an Applescript Editor file and save it as an application.

The application will create a file. You open the file in Google Earth to get your location.

You may need to edit the path for the file.
