I ran into this myself, and it was a killer. In another thread BugByte pointed me to the XML file iTunes maintains with all the song info. You might want to see if reading that is any faster than pulling it through iTunes' AS interface (even if your App is AS, i'd still expect a bit of a speed boost, and if you are Obj-C based then it should be much faster). I haven't finished going through it so I don't know if the playlists are in there as well, but there are track IDs in it which I would assume match the IDs the iTunes AS interface will give/respond to, so you might be able to pull just the IDs from a Playlist which should be much faster.

I'm trying to use AS...just because I want to learn it though.

Perahps I'll have to throw on some obj-c.

I'm guessing here but AS probably doesn't have something that walks the xml object model. It would have to be plain text searching...gross.

    i have a search idea:

if you could press a search button, and get a full screen keyboard to tap on instead of pulling out a regular keyboard... that would be awesome

    yeah...i thought about that...

I looked into a FOSS onscreen keyboard but there doesn't seem to be one...only very expensive commercial ones for people with disabilities.

I like your idea a whole lot. Making one shouldn't be that hard. It would involve a text box that gets sent characters as the buttons are clicked and i'd have to draw up a keyboard interface...but...really not that hard...I think.

The feature creep will kill me

    ...another search idea.

We could just use CDclutter to pick an album

As Onscreen-Keyboard try this: VirtualKeyboard. With $12 it's not so expensive. I'm using it for several months now.

Here are a couple of links I quickly found (never used either so have no idea how practical they are).

Built in XML Suite (starting in 10.4?):
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/Appl.../msg00114.html

Docs for a 3rd party XML Suite (the scripting addition is in their Downloads section under Scripting Additions):
    http://www.satimage.fr/software/en/xml_suite.html

Just based on the docs, the later looks much more complete in that it will do most/all of the parsing and searching for you where the Apple version leaves that all up to you, but that's from a quick 1 minute glance.

    atl $12 sounds pretty good.

I'll bet you don't even have to write any applescript to invoke it if there is a text entry box. Am I right?

I'll continue doing what i've been doing and work on the itunes interface. Maybe later i'll make a simple keyboard (no fuction keys or multiple keypresses at the same time...just straight up text entry) keyboard.

    more teasing...

...changes display modes based on time of day...also user selectable by tapping on the clock. Colors will change...or be a persistent preference (I haven't decided yet)

PS we put an offer on a house today...hopefully I'll get a working alpha (pre-beta?) out before we start to move...if not it might be a while longer before you see anything useable.
