I just downloaded this and tested it out on the PowerBook - basically I could get it to work by dragging the text out of the input box to the desktop (creating a finder file with the word in it) - then selecting the new word file in Finder and selecting Edit-Copy and then pasting it into the text box I want the text in... of course I was using a mouse instead of the touchscreen in my Jeep, but I think it would work the same way. If there was a copy button on the keyboard next to the clear button, that might be more efficient.

Nice work so far... look forward to seeing new versions in the future. Thank you for your effort - it is greatly appreciated!!

The consensus seems to be that you all want a copy button. I think I'll put it to the right side of the text box in the keyboard window. It will copy the text to the clipboard (is that what its called on mac?) and swap the keyboard window out for the little always on top window. Then you can paste the text to any text box you want with whatever method you want (gesture, key, strange scripting with a double tap, whatever). Look for it in a few...I'm finally moving this week.

Also, I think some people arent understanding my instructions for dragging stuff out of the text box on the keyboard window into the text box in another application. I set it up so the text that you type is pre-highlighted (blue). To get it out of there all you should have to do is click-and-hold and drag it out into any text recieving thing. Try it. Also try this: click-and-hold-and-drag the text within the text box (of the keyboard window) to the right a bit. Then release it. Then click-and-hold-and-drag it a little bit again but don't release it. You should notice that the mouse pointer changes to include a little green plus sign. Once it does this you can (while continuing to drag) move the mouse out of the bounds of the keyboard window and the keyboard window will move out of your way so you can plop the text down wherever you want. (I hope this causes one of those lightbulb moments somewhere). If this isn't working give me a PM or post here and i'll see what i can do. (might have something to do with your touchscreen setup...maybe you have it set to double tap to drag or something (like a laptop touchpad) and that's causing this. I wouldn't know I don't have a touchscreen yet. I will soon though as i'm going to trade my psp for one soon after moving to my new house.)

sti-- what i'm thinking about doing is using this together with sizzling keys to pull up playlists and search for songs, etc... which would really require an easier way to use it (like i suggested, have it copy, then paste 5 seconds later)

OK we've got a copy button!

Its updated and you can download it at the same place as before:
    http://66.205.154.83/dashrun/carOSK.app.zip

    2 updates

1)The button window and the keyboard window will be "always on top". This includes "always on top" with the OSX dashboard for those who use the dashboard a lot.

2)The copy button! I guess I lied when I said it couldn't be done. To use the copy button go to the program you would like it to work with and tap the cursor in the text box that you want the text to go in. Press the "OSK" button. Type away. Press the "copy" button. The text will pop into the text box of your app and the keyboard window will be switched with the "osk button" window. The copy button doesn't work with everything at the moment (most notably the itunes search box...i guess it has to do with itunes being AS unfriendly).

What I'd like for you guys to do: Test it out and tell me what works and what doesn't work. If you have a pet app that this doesn't work with please tell me how it doesn't work. I'm also starting to think about internationalizations...but that's only if people want them.

This keyboard look very nice and should do the work.

But if you want others option, Apple Keyboard viewer let you type in any selected text field (I could not found how to use modifier key like command (CMD), ctlr etc).

There is another one like Virtual Keyboard. You can type anywhere, use shift, cmd, ctlr etc, It has many options like resizable, transparency and auto hide but it is not free. 12$ is not so bad if you really need an on-screen keyboard.

I agree that there is competition...but $12 is money and i'm letting people "guide" me in the direction the development is going (such as internationalizations other than italian). Besides, my osk is simpler and aimed at the in car computer crowd (a specific set of needs and a specific screen size, etc.).

Banter aside, I say use whatever works best for you. And thank you for your comments.

I love free software ;-) and I totaly agree with the fact that yours is really oriented for CarPuter usage. I will probably use yours when I feel confortable with it and because it does look very good.

With your skills in Applescript, I hope that after you finish this projet you will help for a Front End.

I wish for an AppleScript Front end, always on top, lots of transparency, small button around the screen, with the option to reduce the interface to only one button on the side which will be use like a toggle switch to hide/show the interface. That would great for me.

Please don't take my other comments as a negative one. You did a great job with the keyboard but I really hope for a front end.

    Thank you

What does the keyboard need to make you "more comfortable" with it?

and frontend is in the works
