The drawing was made in SketchUp and should be in proper size. I exported it to DWG (AutoCAD R13), 3DS and VRML formats and here it goes:

Hmm ... I think that would be very doable. We could add a bracket at the back to securely keep all Power/USB/Audio cables in place. I'll look into that.

car central locking solenoid mounted to the enclosure.

I am guessing you guys want access to the DVD slot but there is another way you could do this - if you dont care about looks....have the mac mini slide in sideways, they you can easily connect all the cables to the back and have a hinged cover that then locks over the connectors on one side. On the othe rside there is a slot at the top for the DVD and on the bottom there is a small solenoid mounted to push the button (hooked up to the carnetix etc etc).

Or if you are good with design and fabrication you could put it in the way you were going to and disguse the solenoid as a locking bracket that flips up when you put the mac mini in to stop it sliding out. If you make it out of ally/persepx etc and keep it a nice shape with the solenoid inside (or underneath and have a simple mechanism) you can make it look sweet and non-obtrusive.

Any chance to get the CAD file with no mini being inserted. Sorry, but I use a cheapo program and it's locking up because of the mini that is going into the case in the design. It's like the picture number one you posted.

I got a reply awhile back. he said that he talked to some fabricating companies and the cost (about $500 i think) wasn't going to be worth it.

I asked him if he considered just making them and selling them himself but he said he would charge about the same amout due to all the time that went into creating just one.

I'd have to go with like 100-200 dollars. I'm making my own for it and a ps3 when it comes out hiding behind the "glove compartment" in my car with a latch/bracket swivel door to hold them in with a slit in the metal for the disk drive.

That's a pretty good idea. It would keep you from having to mod the Mini at all.

Using central locking solenoid to control the Mac mini's power switch is like shooting little birds with GAU-8. Some model servo's (about Euro 7 in Holland) will do just fine.

And if you do not want to bother with electronics at all, just buy an old-fashioned mechanical shutter release cable in the closest photo-store.

BTW: doesn't the new Intel Mini support USB power-up again?

you could just splice into the power on button wire and make contacts in the back when it slides in...

That's what I did with my dock, but it requires you to mod the Mini power button and case. Most people won't want to do that.
