    Update #5 3/20/2006

Well! Progress! MiniCoopS007 has gotten Harmony XM to work after hours of fiddling and investigation! He sent me an example app to try out and I'm listening to my XM Direct box on my desktop Mac right now.

The issue has to do with the XM Direct box being a little more finickey than the XM PCR and sending it the proper bit codes. We've been able to talk to the XM Direct for awhile now, but we couldn't get any music out of it. Now we can.

Harmony XM is just a player app. There's nothing to it except a reset button, a mute button and a way to change the channel. It displays the channel info and the artwork on the GUI. Beyond that, you can't control it. But it will (in the near future) accept Applescript inputs from Harmony and we'll be able to control it from the front end.

Serious props to MiniCoopS007 for getting this to work. If you've got any suggestions on why our AS dictionary seems to show up just fine in Script Editor but doesn't seem to respond to our commands (no errors, nothing), let us know!

    Here's a screen shot:

would be nice to simplify it by just making a signal strength of satillite info such as MacXM

We'll fix it in Harmony. All the data will be available, so we can lay it out however we want.

    Update #6, 3/23/2006

I managed to kill a bug that made the music playback wacky. Harmony wouldn't play songs back in the order that you saw them on the screen. Too lengthy to explain the problem here, but suffice it to say I fixed it.

MinicoopS007 is up to version 1.4.1 of Harmony XM but we're still having problems getting AS to work with it. He's wrapped it in a Cocoa wrapper from pure Java but we just aren't getting any responses from the program. There's certain to be something dead simple we're missing, we just don't know what it is.

Graphical interface is coming along and we're adopting the strategy of concentrating on in-car usability over flash and bling. In the end, that's what will make it a usable app. The graphical look will NOT be in the first release of Harmony. We want to get it out the door in beta before we make the necessary changes to support the graphics.

Also - to keep this thread clean, I'll be removing non-essential posts after awhile to make it easier to read.

    Update #7, 3/28/2006

We're still a ways away from a release. We're still having trouble figuring out how to applescript Harmony XM, although Minicoop has a lead with an AS guy he's following up on.

We're settling on the "interim" look for the beta release. It will be different from the screen shot at the top of this post but is simpler and easier to operate. Both Minicoop and I have been running Harmony alpha in our cars for awhile and to say the functionality could be improved is an understatement.

Anyhow, we're working to make the beta usable and simple -so don't get your hopes up too high for some kind of whiz bang new front end. It will be just the basics to get going, we'll do some bug fixes, then move on to the version that has a polished look and feel to it.

    Update #7, 3/31/2006

Minicoop thinks he can get AS working this weekend on Harmony XM. I've been making some changes to fix and upgrade the guts of Harmony and sent him everything I've done. He'll synch them up and ship me back the current version of Harmony.

We discovered that what we though was a reliability problem with AS writing the prefs sometimes but not others turns out to be the way it is supposed to work. It doesn't always synch the prefs to the plist right away. We've found the Cocoa call that forces a synch and inserted it in our prefs handler. Now all prefs are written immediately. This was causing us trouble when, for example, double tapping a button for the XM player to set a favorite station. It didn't always remember the station you told it to. Fixed now.

As I said in an earlier update, our interface for the beta will be crap but that will be the major change for the next version. We've got a basic 'H' layout we'll use and our designer has been putting a lot of thought into things like the meaning of colors, position of buttons and so forth. Sorry guys, but no screenshots until we're ready to implement. You'd be commenting on works in progress that would change anyhow.
