Yet another Mac front end - CarMinx

I know you guys are probably tired of hearing it, but I am developing a Mac car computer front end.

I require one for my own reasons, and haven't been able to find what I want. Since I have the programming ability, I've I've decide to write my own. (My other software is available at www.hillmanminx.com)

The capability will include the following:

    Music playing
    Movie playing
    Photo viewing
    GPS interface
Multiple monitor support (eg 7" touchscreen on dash, another in rear seat)
Phidget control (www.phidgets.com) (allows display of sensor info such as temperature, pressure, bat. voltage, text on LCD screen, joystick input, control of servos etc etc, RFID control)
    Internet browsing
    Phone interface
    iPod integration

I have created a working prototype, which already allows music playing, movie playing, very basic display of GPS info (lat/lon), internet browsing, and phidget control.

Unlike others who seem to like to focus on a pretty interface that has limited or no functionality, I am very much focussing initially on functionality - the interface, icons etc. will mature later, hopefully with feedback from you guys.

If you are interested in hearing more about the software, send me an email at

    carminx atsymbol hillmanminx dot com

    or visit

    hillmanminx.com/carminx

I hope to have a beta available very soon. Look forward to hearing from you!

    Paul,
I don't know about what may come of your interface, but that site kicks ***

As if I didn't have enough nifty ideas to play with

    Thanks,

Good luck with your project, Paul, and please post images when you're done.

Which phidgets do you plan to use?

Currently supports an interface kit, the RFID kit and the LCDtext display, and reads a selection of analogue sensors (temp, pressure, voltage, current, vibration, relative humidity and mini-joystick).

Eventually should be relatively easy to support all kits and sensors, or at least as many as people request.

I'll post some screenshots on the website soon.

    Thumbs up

What are you using the RFID phidget for? And also, can you have anyhting sent to the LCD? If you could send the Navigational prompts from the GPS to it that would be a perfect candidate to throw in the gauge cluster so you just glance at the gauges to see how far your next turn is, Audi style.

Looking forward to where this goes.

RFID could be used for central locking, or to unlock immobiliser. My own project is an electric car which will not have a key as such, so I plan to use RFID to enable all of the electrical systems, Prius style.

And yes, you can send absolutely anything to the LCD text display, including GPS prompts. That the fun of Phidgets, they are so easily programmable.
