Drain isn;t really a concern as it would be powered off completely on return home every night, just want it quick for when i'm in and out of the car all day long.
I'm not sure even using an inverter would work. You will still have the problem of the drive going offline when you turn the inverter off. The issue is that there is a state change while the Mini is asleep.

I think the firewire drive option is probably the best one, although I'd check to see if it continues to supply power when the Mini is asleep.

What would the situation with power drain be then, i have a Clifford concept 650 with intelli start on the car, so it "can" start and charge if power drops below a certain voltage.

Think i'll contact the manufacturer of that drive and see if they actually know what happens during sleep. Lol

The issue (assuming you are using the P1900) is that the Mini is always drawing some power when the car is off. Obviously that carries a risk of draining your battery. If you add other devices that also stay on, then it is that much more of a drain (how much depends on the individual devices).

On the face of it your setup sounds like it takes care of that issue, but you would need to make sure that your device has a higher setting than the P1900 for low voltage. When the P1900 detects a low voltage, it cuts the power to the Mini to protect your battery. So as long as your system cuts on before then (I don't remember if you can turn that feature off on the P1900 or not) you should be golden.

    This Drive Would Work?

Is that what you are getting at, cos it is powered direct from firewire and not AC/DC
i don't see anything to indicate that that drive is bus powered...

All the bus powered firewire drives we use come from Webetech. Just be careful, not all of them actually work... Some need to use the usb power injector to power up. I don't know about the mini, but the G5's and some G4 towers don't supply enough amps on the firewire 400 buss to power the drives. I can plug the same drive into my powerbook or an eMac and it will work just fine. The powerpc mini is based off the eMac so it might work okay, the intel mini is different and I haven't had the chance to play with one of them yet. I looked over my system again, it wasn't my iPod that stayed unmounted, it was a cf card adapter. I also have a lacie usb2 drive that is always mounted, and stays mounted between sleeps.
    Failure is not an option....

It's installed by default on every version of Windows.
