GPS Receiver + Destinator 3 Frontend

    Hey guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, feel free to move it. Now i have gone against the odds and on my laptop for my car, managed to install Windows XP and then Destinator 3 Front End...For which i must say i love ya Ninja Monkey ... On a P166 with 64mb RAM and 5 gig hardisk. It Runs just but its good enough. But now its time to get a GPS Receiver. My laptop does not have a USB port, so i was thinkin Serial/PS2. Now ive serached the forums but could not find anything on wether this receiver and the Destinator 3 Frontend would work. I was wondering if one of you more expericed could clarify if this would work as it says both NMEA and SIRF. (I do live in Australia)

Yep that'll work fine, although with it being serial it might need an external power source...can anyone confirm?

I think you may find some problems with Destinator keeping up with your position. I found when I used a p166 laptop and navigation the CPU was too slow to draw the screen as it changed and was about 1 mile or so behind very quickly

Cheers Ninja, I just had the feeling that it drew the power from the ps2 port. I am probably completely wrong. But thanks for that. Enforcer, well ill soon find out, i can only try, but thanks for ur reply.

Thats the serial version of mine so you should be OK - how ever I would advise you to get the USB one instead and get a PCMCIA USB Port card instead because if you upgrade you may find you have to buy another GPS.

No, you're right. Some serial GPS mice take their power from the ps2 port.
I had a Leadtek with an USB cable and I got myself a serial+ps2 cable, because it wouldn't come out of hibernation with the USB cable. It works great.
