I am going to build this in a GPS application that I am currently building. It will be for the US. It won't be mod for Mapmonkey though.
Well... i think the majority of people only need a section of their state .... maybe if we can cut out areas that we drive around the most, then it would bring down the space requirement for maps. I know i would only need southern california and mabye vegas... thats it. this would be amazing if it could be implemented, but i have a feeling all of us VIA chipset owners would have a problem with such high detailed maps.

yeah.. we just gotta figure out a way to compress the photos a tad so we can bring it down to like a few gigabytes for each state (i think thats worth it if you ask me).

The whole United States is compressed is 3TB. The way the US Maps work is you have to download them in real time meaning you have to have a connection to the internet. What I could have it do is download the image and keep a copy of it, that way you wouldn't have to redownload it again if you entered the same area.

Now all we need is real time footage of you driving down the road direct from the satellite! It could then warn you of cars cming the other way for safe overtaking etc - but i think thats a bit far off yet!

Full colored maps. So much detail when it is fully zoomed in that you can almost pee your pants. Just look:
