    Development of Map Monkey

Map Monkey is great, but there are a lot of things more which are nice to be implemented.
But at the moment, it seems to me, Ninja is still not developing. I'm wondering why the application is not open source. So we can develop also on the application...

Ninja whet through a lot of stuff to get MM to the point it is. Not only the programming side of it but all the ***** with Powerloc (the makers of D3) He wrote the software, so naturally he is protective of it. He seems to have had a break from the forums for the last few months, although I have seem him around over the last week.
You could approach him via pm and ask to help. I am not sure what his answer will be.
You could also talk to CDRskull. He might like some help with Freedrive.

Thunderbird, incase you hadn't realised, although it's not open source, he has done the DLL that lets you communicate with it, so you can do what you extra stuff you want to it in other ways.

What is not open source? The dll of Powerloc, I know. But the Map Monkey app can be open source. I don't see why not?

MapMonkey isn't open source otherwise hundreds of clones would appear. NM wrote Mapmonkey from the ground up, it has a full sdk which allows you to write your own plugins .... i.e no need for it to be open source. I'm sure NM will make patches available as and when he has time.

I know a lot of Opensource projects which don't have clones. If it is opensource, only administrators of the project can update the real code base. But everyone can create patches and email or post them to the administrators. Even bad code can enhanced by users... Bugs can solved a lot faster. So the administrator (NM) can apply more patches in less time.

And what's the problem of clones? Further, what if NM has no more time? Or he dies? We don't have anything... Further development of this app is not guarenteed and the world is turning and turning, but this app stagnates...

How morbid! I'll be sure to leave the source code to somebody in my will!

If you are that bothered write your own from scratch! NM was the pioneer of touchscreen friendly GPS apps for the CarPC, I would also be protective of the code if I had written something similar .... once you release the code you can lose control of the application, as has happened before with other apps.

Also, as already stated, there is the dll for mapmonkey so you can alter the stuff you want to, write addons etc.

If he doesn't have time right now to write his own patches then I highly doubt he is going to have time to manage it open source. I'd just rather write something myself rather having to deal with other peoples crap. Just my opinion, maybe he feels the same way.
