Navigator software now has a FREE version!

There are now two versions of Navigator software:

    1. The good old paid software which includes map data licensed from Teleatlas

    2. The same software as above, but the included map data is from Open Street Map. This version is absolutely FREE, with no time limit!

    More details: PC Navigator FREE

Kudos to Directions LTD. / mapFactor for making this free version available.

    Great news!
I just downloaded and installed it and I don't think it has any maps included.

I then downloaded what I think is a valid map, but how do I install it?
The file name came down as map.osm and I placed it in the PC_navigator\config\map directory.
Program still say's I need to install maps.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    davidk

    Whoops, just found it...sort of.
The installer has a button to Install PC Navigator, then it has three buttons. Install program, install data and user manual.

Unfortunately, under install data, there isn't a selection for the US.

Let's see what I get with the default selections.

    Thanks,
    davidk

No love for those of us using a Blackberry.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

I really don't understand how openstreet maps work.
How do you download maps to make your own?
    And, what are traces?

During the installation you will see "Install software" and "Install maps" buttons. I first selected the "Install software", and when that part was completed, I clicked the "Install maps" button. That prompted me to select maps of various countries.

    Thanks for the heads up!
    I'll give it a shot.

Is that using the install utility or once you started the software?
When I started the software I got booted out since I didn't have maps installed.

IF there are no maps available for my area, how should I go about building my own?

It's using the install utility. There will be a small pop-up with a few buttons. Two of the buttons will be the ones I mentioned above (Install software, Install maps).

After you click the 'Install software', the pop-up will stay open, so you will still be able to click the 'Install Maps' after the software installation completes.

Seems to be impossible for now, i had a short mail conversation with a guy at directions.ltd.uk: (read bottom up)

yes, it would be nice and we would not have to process the data, but it is not practical
process is quite complex and takes a long time, Germany about 3 days
and on top of that data structure keeps changing

    Hi

thanks a lot for your quick answer.

German map is already there and Iíve tried some navigation in simulation mode and it seems to work fine. My question was more in general. As OSM-Data tends to update constantly it would be nice to have a chance of generating maps for Navigator on your own. Maybe just take this as a nice to have suggestion or as a wish for the future ;-)

    Hi

at this moment we are at the very beginning, so there is no time pattern for map release - in the future we hope to release them at least once per quarter.

    you cannot use OSM directly.

I assume you are asking about Germany - this country should be released next week.

    Regards

    Dear Sir or Madame

Iíve a question about your free version of Navigator using OSM-Data:

How often are the maps updated? And is there a way to extract the map for Navigator from OSM on my own? Maybe with a Tool for Selecting the Area, or by commandline or http request or something like that? E.g. if there are errors in the map and I corrected them on OSM I want them to be in Navigator for my next trip, or if there are no maps available for the region via the installer tool.

    Regards
