CC - this is almost exactly what I've been looking for!! Awesome stuff!

I'm a newb, but I'm hoping I can help with glitches.

I need to open Winamp first before the MM otherise I get a loop of WA opening and shutting - most annoying!!

I can't get into the extensions or volume control on the main menu at all. Dunno why.

Are there visualisations? I can't get any of them to work, but that's probably down to me not getting into the other menus.

I can't map actual keys to the keys on the setup bit. I want up arrow to be the up arrow and enter to be enter etc, but I can't!! My system will use a keypad control, so this is kind of vital The keypad arrows work in mp3 browsing but not in the main menu - weird!!!

Can I use multiple dirs? For instance - c:\rock\w\White Zombie\Electric Head to make navigating a bit easier? And have you thought about a random play option?

Long song names are hiding behind the Volume bit on the MP3 play screen.

    FYI, I'm using Win2k Pro.

Gotta say though - very impressed so far and if this works I will owe you a beer! I'm hoping that a bit of newbie feedback can be my input into this great piece of software. Consider myself a beta tester!!!!

    Many thanks,

    Majik

I am aware of all of those things. I have been trying to do a rewrite on this, but I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, so production has been held up until I can figure this out...

I have MSComm1 on each form. When you press a button on the IRman, it generates an ONComm event. The problem is, when I use the oncomm event to switch between forms (mainmenu to playlist lets say) I get a port already open error (8005). It only happens when I do this...

    playlists.visible = true
    load playlists

    unload mainmenu

If I leave unload mainmenu out, it works, but I lose control of the IRman.

    any ideas.???

    BTW..

MajikNWA,- read the INSTALLTIPS.txt file. It explains directory structure. Volume control and extensions are not finished, so they are not active. I have had trouble with the enter/arrow keys (which is what everyone wants to use.) For the time being, try mapping them to number pad with NUM LOCK turned on (so 8 is 8 and not UP and 2 is 2 and not DOWN.)

The winamp open shut thing only happens when you try to play mp3s, and have not previously selected a song. Play Mp3s is just to resume where you last played music.

If you have any more ideas, please let me know.

I may end up rewriting this whole dang thing if I cannot figure out the IRman's new problem.

Thanks veyr much for replying CC.

Can I make a daft suugestion? If you are seriously on about rewriting the whole thing due to the IRMan problem, then you write polish off this version for us non-ir people? Sys resources are scarce on most MP3 players, so take the IR out of this one as it stands and see if you can work the bugs out of this version first. The IR users can wait Apart from anything else, you're only going to encounter the saem problems again that you have without the IR now, right? SO once this version is complete, then embed the new IR ideas into version 2.

Off to actually read what i'm meant to in the text file now (RTFM!!!)

    Thanks again,

    Majik

CarComp - the error you're getting is because the MSComm control on whatever form you're about to unload still has the the serial port hooked open when you load the new form and try to open the port using it's MSComm control. Try doing this:

MSComm.PortOpen = False ' <<<< close the port before we unload the parent form

    playlists.visible = true
    load playlists

    unload mainmenu

You can't have more than one (open) handle to a comm port at any given time.

Well, I think that is common in the softwre world.

As more people get interested, more people will join in and better software will be developed.

By the way, I figured how I am going to mount my LCD screen. After hours of searching on here, I am going to use a cell-phone bracket, that slides in next to the din radio slot.

    I figured it out...

I wasn't re-initializing the IRman when the form gotfocus. I was just opening the port.

    DUh

BTW, I am taking care of those keyboard problems now....

Thanks though, Phat_bastard. I can always count on ya to know what you are talkin about.

CC - couple of other suggestions for your systems.

CD audio - I'll be using a CD rom drive for normal CDs. Again, being ignorant to programming, I don't know how easy this is to do, but it's a request

You're doing the DVD thing anyhow, aren't you? Excellent

Within the customisable thing, it'd be great to be able to change the image at the top to whatever you want.

Playing more and more with the system, it's turning out even better than first thought. I've integrated an LCD plugin into Winamp and it goes beautifully with your system.

I'm also playing with the voice activation plugin and it's looking good to integrate nicely again so another control system can be used.

    Testing continues...

Quick question. I just downloaded the 1.1.0 verson and when I try to run it on XP to test, it will not play anything and when i go to the playlist selection, it gives me this error:

    Run-time error '8018':
Poeration only valid when prot is open.

    Any ideas?

    Ok... This is for everyone.

I have learned a lot from all who have helped me. Media Engine Beta was a learning experience for me. I have a feeling that I have run into a brick wall with Version 1.x.x (even though there have been only 5 revisions, and two versions released.)

I have been getting too many errors and have found myself writing more "fix" code than actual "useable" code. Anyone who has viewed the source will see this.

I am now going to write a non-beta working release (beta to me is "test", to see what I need to do)

All of the features in media engine 1 will be in the new version, it will just work much better, and be more easily understood by fellow programmers.

I will still be releasing source code.

Tell me what you want to see in the next version.
