    Start your (Media) Engines!!!

Ok well I couldn't wait any longer so here is a sneak preview of what updates Media Engine has been going through. I know CarComp wanted to wait until the SkinBuilder was finished, but it seemed pretty buggy to me right now so just know that it is coming. Hope you don't mind my itchy trigger finger, Mitch. I want you guys to see the other stuff.

For now, you can check out Media Engine with its two available skins.

Please if you have a D-Link Radio download this and test it for me. It should be self explanatory how to add your stations to the stations.txt file.

Also please take a look at the video player.

Note that most of these updates are for use with a touchscreen, so please try them even if you don't use a touchscreen in the car.

There is no installer so just unzip and run.

    Wow, thanks

Thanks for the pre-release, but i'm having some difficulties.

    1) Can't quit playing a movie, have to wait till it's finished
    2) External application won't start (in my case Internet Explorer)

hope this will be fixed in your next release

KlereBak - How are you trying to quit the movie? what type of input device are you using? Update: I'm not sure what the problem is. Please give me more details.

I will check into the external app problem. Update: It has been fixed. A new version has been posted.

hotwater9 - Make sure you choose a new playlist before you try to play music. Otherwise, delete the playlist.m3u file from the directory. It should not have been there.
Update: This has been fixed too.

I've tried this on two computers, on both cpomputers i assigned the "esc" key as "quit". I only use the keyboard for navigation. So the problem is as the movie starts and i decide to stop watching it i have to press "escape", now that won't work in 170beta.

Hmm... tried the "new" 170beta problem seems to be away. I will test this later release a bit more and keep you posted.

Thanks for your quick reply, looking forward to the "skinbuilder".

That's what i like to hear. Didn't change anything with the new version and that function though. Please try the touchscreen features even if you don't use them. I just want to know if people like them.

    az1234,

I think i've found the problem with the "esc" key, it happened this morning again. Pressing "esc" showed the Windows toolbar and there was no other way to quit playing movies than pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and quit MediaEngine. It's not really an issue because i use MediaEngine as my default explorer and in that situation i works like a charm.

I have another question for you, is it possible to change the playlist layout. As far as i know it shows ID3V1 tag information in the following order "artist" - "title". But since "artist" and "album" is also showed in the upper left window, i think it is not needed in the playlist.

I also noticed, that in the latest release you can skip forward and backward in your movies, so if you have more than one movie in your list you can go forward to another movie. But after a movie is finished it goes back to the main menu and not to your previous selected movielist. Is it possible to change the behaviour of MediaEngine so that it returns to the selected movielist after playing a movie, or that it's continues playing movie after movie, just like mp3?

I have all my music organized by genre, so I prefer to browse based on artist and title, but i can see your point if you have yours organized by artist and album. I will add to my list of things to do having an option to not show the artist in the list. I am going to work on ID3v2 support soon so I'll probably include it with that update.

Return to the movie playlist after playing all the movies in a given directory? Hmm...sounds good. Return to the selected movielist? I'm not sure if i like that as much....so I'll probably just have it return to the general movie directory. How's that?

Thanks for your feedback.... everyone else don't be shy. Join in. I'm waiting for a touchscreen user to say "The autohide feature for the buttons in the movie player is just what i've been waiting for."

Thanks again for your quick reply, can't wait for future releases.

About MP3, ID3v2 would be great and if possible select your own album information as suggested before.

About MOVIE, return to previous selected list will do for me. As i have different sets of short clips.

    Will future releases support DirectMovie?

Again i have something to say, but tonight i was playing a bit with MediaEngine especially the movie part. But i can't get MediaEngine to play my movies as the way i would like it. First let me tell you what hard and software i use for media engine.

Mainboard: VIA EPIA C3-800, 512Mb Ram, 80Gb harddrive. Software: Windows Millenium, yeah i know, not the best but extremely fast at startting up en shutting down.

MPG movie playback is not a problem, but AVI (DIVX) is a mayor problem, i can't get it right, tried different codecs but none of them support VFW.

How can i get MediaEngine to play my DIVX movies, or is it possible to integrate a real movieplayer like ZoomPlayer or BSPlayer, both are known as the best players around.

I did a small test with ZoomPlayer and with DIVX quality setting set to minimum i've got good playable movies on my screen. But if that works i could also use FDDShow as codec which has a much smaller footprint (less system resources are wasted).

I know i ask much, but hey i like your program.
