ME1.7 sucks IMO. External App's always crashes my entire OS, not just ME/StreetFinder.. So I am using Winamp/Zoom Player/StreetFinder and its working out great.

I can't even get the source off the CVS so I can modify it. Why? Because this is not true opensource software, which blows.

Who ever said you need to have a CVS for something to be opensource ?
And while the 2.0 version may be closed source, if you want to change the source for 1.77, the source is available for download at the media engine webssite.

Sorry, I didn't mean that CVS is required, but it is a norm thing for most OSS. Or at least the source avalible, which it's not. Yes, I know 1.77 is avalible, but that doesn't help much when I want to work on the latest, does it?

Sorry Sigma but closing the source to the current version is a decision that the MediaEngine dev team has made. We will always release the source for the previous major version though

So that means when you're workin on 2.1 you will release the 2.0 source? Or when you've released 2.1 you'll release the 2.0 source?

Last I checked 1.7 was the current major version

    Unless I'm missing something...

Not that I'm critisizing -- you guys can do whatever you want to do, but this decision will likely end up shooting you in the foot. Users will add new features to the 'old' version of the software that aren't easily portable to the new versions either by you or by them. Your software may be highly functional and very widely used at this point in time, but with this decision your project will quickly fork and your userbase will fragment heavily prior to each major release. It has only taken a couple of weeks for this to already start happening, and while the 'forked' code features are already apparently in ME2.0, the real problems will happen when someone releases a forked ME1.7 with considerable features that cannot be easily adapted or included in ME2.0 by the developers. ...Not that that is a bad thing for the community as it will probably result in better software -- it's just a bad thing for you guys to have happen to your code as you will receive little return for opening the source at all. From your perspective, I'd almost suggest that having no source is better than the current model with nary a license in sight.

Even though my desire to develop on MediaEngine rather than reinvent the wheel is still quite strong, I would rather start a new project from scratch rather than write a bunch of code that will be unusable for the future of MediaEngine... Which is why I am doing it.
