External App support

I am just about to install a TV/Radio PCI card into my Shuttle but am a little confused about MediaEngine and it's support for such things.

1. I see that ME only supports a D-Link USB radio - however can I run the TV and Radio card apps as external programs in ME or do I have to close ME and start them independently?

2. Is ME free or do we have to (or should we) pay for it? Is it open source?

3. Haven't decided on which GPS to buy yet - I have used various Alpine and Mercedes sat nav systems and they were awesome with predictive text entry, turn by turn guidance and very clear screen images. I have also used various PC packages which were awful - great for planning but no use when driving. I have read a ton of posts on the subject but is there a definitive solution? Destinator is being integrated into ME I see but the screenshots so far make it look a little lame - I might be being unfair though. Just how good is it?

MediaEngine is free, and I don't think it is open source. Check out the MediaEngine website for questions.
