Need Help with MPEG and Media Engine

I'm new here so this might be a dumb question.

I have read all that i can find out about running MPEG movies here and havent found the answer. It seems that only MPEG movies that i have rendered (i use VegasVideo, VCD,SVCD) will run on ME, all the movies that i have d/l from news groups don't, unless i rerender them. I have installed PowerDVD, installed/unistalled mediaplayer 7, 9.... hoping that it is the codecs doing this..

    What am i missing here?

ByTheWay.. great program, better yet if i could figure out what i'm doing wrong.

    TIA

Most likely you need the divx codec and possible the xvid codec. I currently use "cole's codec pack" to get my codecs installed on computers. But there is also nimo's, and a kazaa one. They float around on the P2P networks, or use google. Of course you could always go to www.divx.com and dl the codec (under the divx tab).

If I could make a recommendation....uncheck the player option when you set up Divx...just get the codec and thats all. I have found that the player installs some interesting stuff and it really didnt playback any better than the media player it overrode. My $.02

YEP, That was it. I was figuring it had to do something with the Codecs. So far this software seems to be fitting just what i need. I do have a few questions tho', What DVD player software should be on my drive? WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc.? Does it matter if more than one type of DVD s/w be on the drive? What about for music? WinAMP, Media Player, etc.? If i go into my DVD player and set up the format of the screen (along with the color) will it stay there when i go into mediaengine?

I'm new to all of this and am trying to get it right, but there seems to be alot to learn here. I appreciate all the help you guys are giving.. Thanks
