i found making them that big is a bad idea. they don't scale down well. do them at 800x600. the skins scale up a lot better then down.
I'm making a skin for ME, even though i'm only 14 so I obviously don't have a carputer, let alone a car. What resolution should i make it at? 1024x768 and then people can just scale it down?

but will not be at its best quality.
make your source graphics as high resolution as possible, and save off a lower size version for the final. What screen resolution are you using on your home PC and what program are you using to make the graphics?
Images allways scale down better than scaleing up. There simply isnt enough pixels in any image to scale up too much without it looking like crap. You can get away with a little upscale, but it would still look better not scaled at all.
If your using photoshop change the image size and it will resample the image to the desired size and not just scale it.
images in general do scale down well.. but in media engine if you have a noisy background.. like a lot going on.. ME does not scale down well. My first skin i did in like 1280x1024 or whatever and when scaled to 800x600 the background was awful.
