In the UK any car built after 1973 must have 2 rear view mirrors, one of which has to be on the exterior on the drivers side, a lot of trucks and vans dont use an interior mirror cos you couldnt see anything except the back of the cab anyway!

    this link might prove interesting

I've seen many cargo vans that came with rear view mirrors. Funny stuff.

I always use all my mirrors, i've driven cars without a rearview and it does make it harder. At least for me.

I had to search for this real quick because I remember posting to a few threads like this.

    The general concensus.... bad idea.

I'll give ya an "A" for thinking outta the box, but try somewhere else.

Actually people who don't look over their shoulder and physically look around them cause accidents as well. Your wide angle mirror is going to reduce blind spots, but it won't eliminate them. It's still possible and easy to lose a motorcycle or small car from your line of site by merely relying on mirrors.

I would think another problem with a camera and screen system would be the fact that the image is not reversed. Personally, I think a driver's eyes are trained to look in mirrors and know that the image is reversed like a mirror. However, a rear facing camera would not have this. So what you see on the right side of your screen is coming up on the left side of your car. Then again, I don't have one of these cameras, so I don't know.

    Just my opinion.

A camera for rear view, like so?

But be sure to check your state and local laws about not having a rear view mirror.

It does seem a bit mad discussing the benefits of mirrors in a media engine forum, but personally I wouldn't be able to put enough faith in rear view cameras *with no mirrors at all*. Imagine performing some delicate reversing manouver just when Windows performs one of it's many random disc writes and your camera doesn't update for a split-second or so... bang! I'm sure the other guy (or gal) would understand that you hit them because "my rear view camera didn't refresh cos XP was checking it's integrity!" lol

I never use my internal rear view mirror anyway - my dad taught me how to drive in a van with no rear windows (he's a lorry driver you see). And as somebody else said, it is legal to remove it in the UK if you have your two wing mirrors (it's amazing how much sky it hides).
