Thread: No place to put my Xenarc except for?

Well make sure you are old enough to drive first, and hehn make sure oyu have a license and have passed a driving test to obtain it, in which case you'll be familiar with the rules and laws/regulations on these kidns of things.

I'm pretty sure removing your rear view mirror is illegal. And I'm also pretty sure I use it allot. There are these things called blindspots, you can't see them form your side mirrors, which is why we look in to the rear view mirror and hte side mirror before changing lanes.

They do make replacement mirros with tiny screens on one side of them, for backup camera's, but as I said above, repalcing the mirror with a camera completely isn't legal, nor sane, err, I mean, safe. Mirrors reflect light, so when oyur head moves, so does the image on the mirror, for better visability. A camera would thus have it's own blindspots, and is only useful for backing up, as not to slam into another object, if you need a camera to help with that (or jsut for cool factor ^^).

If oyu mess up your resolution or use a crappy VGA extension cable the picture on the Xenarc will get messed up. Jsut don't do either of those htings. Resolution is good at 800x600 or 800x400 (use PowerStrip if oyu video card supports it).

There is no way to make media engine take up half of the screen, or to split the screen on the xenarc half VGA and half video input.

If you get pulled over, just turn off your monitor. My monitor is mounted right above my radio, it's not obstructing my view of the road at all - non the less, it is illegal in most states ot have a monitor in view of the drive that is not used exclusively for GPS, so when getting pulled over, turn it off. Unless the cop pulled you over because of the monitor you should be ok. I've never had a cop mention it or any of the other crap all over my car (not even my purple LED's :P) when being pulled over.

Now, if you have removed your rear view mirror in place for a monitor, and are fidgiting with it when you get stopped, then I don't think you'll have the same luck . Do not remove or mess with your seatbelts, turn signals, headlights, or airbags either, in case oyu were thinking of doing so :P. And stay away from my car please.

actually it is legla to use a video system as a rear view mirror, but I think it has to be a dedicated system... in all likely hood a 5 second delay to switch back would work but I can't see how it could be done with media engine... if your monitor uses 2 inputs you can switch to a camera as the second input (IE one input is vga the otehr is composite) but if a cop saw you fiddleing with a monitor while driveing your done...

I don't know about replacing it with a camera, but legally to remove your rearview mirror, you need towing mirrors on the sideviews, which are those dome-type mirrors.

Pretty sure every state has their own set of rules. For example, New Hampshire (my state of legal residence) requires two usable rear view mirrors, any combination of center and side view. Also, I've heard that in many cases (surely not all, though) a rear view camera monitoring system is legal in place of a mirror.

Of course, all that being said... Who really cares about laws any way? lol.

We all speed, don't we? Have DVD capable screens visable to the driver, use our cell phones while driving, have tinted side windows, tricked out flourencent lighting in some cases, etc, etc, etc?

The real question is, do you feel comfortable enough about your drving ability (and of those who might use your car) to safely remove your primary rearward reference? And do you feel comfortable making a justified arguement in the case that someone of authority actually calls you on it?

They eliminate the blidnspot you would get if you took the thing off :P. My mirror is wide angle so there isnt' much of a blind spot. People who don't look into the rear view mirror before they change lanes cause accidentrs eventually unless they are really lucky.

Serisouly though, with carpc's, allot of downtime will happen for one reason or another, and that would leave you with absolutely nothing. Plus a camera there still isn't as safe as a mirror, whether it feels that way or not .

You don't have to have a rear view mirror. Sorry I have to be the one to say it but IMO that would be a very dumb idea to replace your mirror with a screen/camera. For one, your screen is going to be twice as big and a pain to mount. Mirrors are better than your Xenarc for viewing capabilities. You are spending a whole lot of money on a stupid idea. It is going to be a pain to use the touchscreen if it is mounted up there. And many other reasons that I could probably think up. Just use common sense.

Though I do think a rear view camera on one of those mirrors with a tiny screen built in to one side would be cool. I'll probably ust hook one up to my xenarc though, cuz my car's mirror is weird shaped, wide angle, and auto dimming and has all kind of wirigngoing in to it, so replacing it would suck ><.

More than anything else - its on perfect view to would be thieves. I wouldn't be happy installing it in place of the rear view mirror purely froma security aspect.
