    newbie help!

Hey, dled your program, played with it for about 10 mins before i was flooded with questions.

    1. how to resize the skin maker screen to 800x480?
    2. will the shuttlexpress work with this program? I mean, its independantly programable so in theory it should, but i haven't gotten it up and running on my proposed CPC system yet (designing on my multimedia station).
    3. Will Bruno's speech recognition work with it?
    4. Can i make it, when the button is clicked, that a sound is played?
    5. I've dabbled in visual basic. Why would your system use up so much that you would recommend a 2.0 ghz cpu? I mean, unless i'm completely mistaken, and no offense meant, all it is is a touchscreen and car friendly start menu that ties into other programs, with a few nice goodies of its own. why such high specs? I'm seriously at a loss on this one.
    6. I have an audigy NX, like everyone else on the forum. Why wouldn't i get the equalizer settings to take effect off the card since it san indiependat sound system...or will i?
    7. can i change my media player to creative's so i can use the CMSS for the Line in?

Thanks for your help and answers. I'm really looking forward to tweakin ghtis program to suit my needs. Honestly, your FE program fits my needs about 85-90%, whch is more than most, and i do appreciate your work.

I'm not sure where you're getting this information, but we've never really published an official hardware recommendation.

Try as I might, I cannot resist the urge to throw in some sarcasm here...

I was not aware of the fact that EVERYONE on this forum has an Audigy NX.

Seriously tho, the equalizer you speak of probably only works if you leave it running. I'm not familiar with it as mysteriously I don't have an Audigy NX. Sorry, couldn't resist... =D

To be fair it does list the min requirements as
    CPU: Pentium II 300Mhz.
    Memory: 64MB Ram

I'm sure that updating the database would be faster on the "better performance" system, but quite honestly it just looks like it was arbitrarily chosen.

As far as I can tell the skin maker runs at whatever resolution your desktop is set to, so if you want to work in 800x600 just temporarily set your resolution down to that.

Yes, but that wasn't the question, was it? Everyone has a min requirement of a PC from the last century. XP can run on specs like that (not well, but it runs, i have friends that will verify). My cuirousity is spurred because there are graphic intensive games from a a few years back, like Medal of Honor, Allied assualt, or KOTOR that have lower recommended specs than this program. My point: those hare some really high specs, even for arbitrary. Its like a toyota that recommends super (other than the TT Supra). I am curious to simply know the reason, that's all. If there is no reason, i will be satisfied with that.

Oh, phat, the good news is that when creative is the sound card, the EQ runs all the time, through system playback. I'm sorry to hear you dont' have one, are you sure you didn't lose it or something? . Seriously though, what EQ do you use, i'm considering getting one for myself.

I didn't say thank you for your answers before, so i apologize for the slip. I know i'm giving you a hard time, but i wouldnt' be if i wasn't using your program as my front end, if that means anything.

I'm not sure exactly how to interpret that comment, but database build time is almost exclusively a function of disk throughput. Unfortunately that's a performance spec that's frequently compromised in a carpc.

I can't really answer the question of where the 'optimal' requirements came from as I didn't have much to do with the creation of the manual (which I might add is horrendously outdated). My personal carpc is an Athlon 3200, which is overkill to the extreme. On the other hand, I had a motherboard meltdown earlier this year (more like a cracked trace) and temporarily used my 2.4g celeron on a Biostar mobo that was no match whatsoever to the Intel board that went kaput. My point there is that CPU speed somewhat relative, and not the only factor that impacts system performance. The horsepower debate could go on forever, but it all boils down to what you want / can afford. I prefer to have lots of extra CPU, and I pay for it with battery banks and power accessories to keep all those extra clock cycled ticking (look at my sig for pics of my install). I also know of ppl running it on an epia 800 and feel it works adequately for their needs. A couple years ago someone gave me an EPIA 800, and after loading windows on it and tweaking for hours I gave it back. Nowhere near fast enough.

Perhaps the reason I don't have one is because you've forgotten to donate one...

You'd be hard pressed to find one like I use. It's ancient; from the car audio dark ages, though in my defense it was essentially free (it cost me one diode to repair). I'd like to own a better paragraphic EQ, but this one does the job and the price was right.

    My EQ

I'm not at all familiar with the capabilities of the Audigy, but I can tell you that I've listened to and tested a number of software DSP systems, and I've been impressed by none. DSP is something that should be embedded and isolated to a dedicated CPU that does not share the burden of other time sensitive processes such as decrypting / decompressing DVD video, etc.

Any time. Sorry I couldn't offer more complete informations for you.

hehe, thanks for letting me know you didn't recieve my donation...i was wondering why i didn't see it on my tax return

believe it or not, i'm being offered an Alpine 3402 or some infinity glove mounted crossover. I can't afford the hifonics V11. Hehe, i'm doin it old school! But i'm tyring to get a good recommendation. Dont' need DSP if i can get 4.1 or something out of my setup.

What eq is that? I'm with you on staying away fromsoftware based, but i make do with what i got.

I'm so out of the high-end scene today, that none of that means much to me. AudioControl used to be the gold standard of signal processing back in the day (1990), but I've let my magazine subscriptions expire long ago.

I'm almost ashamed to say, but next to the uber ghetto Power Acoustic 3-way crossover I guess it's actually a step up. That would be an LA Sound LEQ26 13 band. I believe LA Sound evaporated in the mid nineties, but as I recall they were considered to be the poor man's Precision Power (pastel color schemes). If it ever rolls over and dies I'll have to look into a 4 band parametric. Oh, and to save on any possible ridicule I might be inviting for the PA crossover - I've re-engineered it extensively - lowering the fixed crossover points and whatnot. I also had to hardwire around the switch contacts that proved not to enjoy the years of vibration.

hehe, no ridicule, i'm poor too, lol . That's a pretty sleek set up actually for the probable cost (except the vinyl...i'll tell your shop teacher on you!). I was 5 in 1990, but around '95 is when these things started being built to break, so i guess i missed a golden age in terms of quality. The Alpine is a '93 model, supposedly competition, i was hoping you heard some good things about it or could lead me to better prospects. Its expensive...almost as much as what i paid for my set up thus far... PM or im me, please. My handle here is my SN. Would love to talk and pick your brain and maybe even get back into VB programming.

    And the Quest Continues...

Hey, instead of starting a new thread, i think i'll just continue this one...

    More Questions

    1) Is there any wayt hat you can make the Play Music Button open something other then the embedded winamp player....like Creative MediaSource (Sorry, i just like that programm, really desire to use it)

    2) BSR 1.3.1 is free, so i don't think i need to donate it to you. hehe, but in all seriosuness, i wouldn't mind if there was some voice control capability to it. Simple way of doing it is the ability to make the buttons and then have the "statement" run that keystroke. Like, Main Menu woudl be F1, music F2...and so on. I mean, fi you could make it so that all the buttons were mappable...good times!

    3) I've been having issues with the skinmaker. Lots of them. Biggest one ismy inability to get it to work. maybe its an effect of the car accident, but i wouldn't mind having an AIM convo on it cause i fear i'll be that slow as i'm not getting it now. I have the background ready,
I want to change a few things, like text color throughout and text itself. I want to just mess around with it.

    4) how do i add .mov decoding capabilities? I tired and was not successful. Same with WMV. The Halo 3 Trailer plays like crap and wihtout sound, while some of the other mini movies have bad artifacts in them. In Windows Media Player, this doesn't happen (just saying that the files are good). Can i make a movie playlist as well? When i try to select, it plays the move, but ofcourse, i could just be doing it wrong.

    5) I am going to be running extendind desktop in windows. I shouldn't be doing much to change around the second display at all (not really clicking in there). It iwll be running Y!WE (yahoo Widgets Extension) as well as displaying my night vision output. The output will be continous, so no biggie on the

that's it for now. thanks again!
