    Still no go

    No Daemon Tools installed.
Autoplay is enabled despite the configuration screen says (Checked with regedit)
Ignore all the removable drives in the 'My Computer' screenshot, I left my normal USB hub at work so had to use a card reader hub.
Third screenshot is what I get when I select 'Watch Movies'
I've tried reinstalling ME (uninstalled and remove all references in the registry first)
Settings file at end of post (renamed to .txt so I could upload it)
    Nothing of interest in debug.log

    Attached Files Attached Files

Do you see your dvd drive when you click 'Browse Media'?

On a related topic, please hold off on the screen caps unless I ask for them. You've adequately described your problem using language. Screen caps don't create hits on text searches and in this case they didn't explain anything to anyone that has read what you've written.

    Browse Media gives me
    - Browse Database
    - Browse Removable Drive E: (then again for F:, G: and H: )
    - Build a new PlayList
    - Favourites
    - etc

I've also tried deinstalling the DVD and IDE under XP and rediscovering.
    It's got me stumped.

Ok (have resized them to something more suitable)
Screen caps do allow for someone else to pick up something stupid I've done and missed because I've been looking too long.

    Thanks for the help.

Totally pointless, as is re-installing M/E.

You're not alone. There's really nothing you've posted thus far that would indicate the cause of your problem.

Here are a few more things to look at / try:
Have you tried an older build of M/E, say 2.3.3-2.3.4?
Do you have any apps running in the background that could be interfering with things (i.e. a dvd player app)?
You mentioned that autoplay is enabled, why did you mention that and how do you know?
Just to re-cap, you are for sure able to browse the filesystem on the dvds you're trying to play through explorer? What folders / files do you see?

    • Same problem with 2.3.3
    • No apps running in the background
    • Device Manager shows the drive under "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and I can open the properties for the drive.
    • If I put an audio CD in (shop bought, not one I've burnt), I can browse it using Explorer (Track01, Track02 etc). If I put a video DVD in (shop bought), I can browse it using Explorer (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders). Data CDs can be browsed as normal.
    • Autoplay is definately disabled. Confirmed by checking HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdrom - AutoRun. I only mentioned it as I thought I was seeing a discrepancy between how ME was configured and what I was seeing.
    • Bit the bullet and reinstalled Road Runner. DVD plays correctly with the internal player.
    • Upgraded firmware on DVD drive (TSSTcorp SH-D162C DVD-ROM) and confirmed that the motherboard BIOS was at the latest level.
    • | Machine scans clean with Sypbot and Ad-Aware. AV sigs are up to date.

Apart from the minimual debug.log file, are there any other debug tools hidden in ME? eg. Something that dumps the system config?
    | Does ME interrogate the system looking for drives in some non-standard fashion? I'd assume that the Windows API was being used.

Not really, it can expose corrupted files/registry entries (emphasis on the "can".)

    Again, pointless.

You have AV software on a CarPC? Scary. I'm assuming you have wifi and a browser?

Not really. If the next test doesn't give us any clues I'll build you a custom binary that will help us pinpoint the issue.

We're probably making one call to check if the drive is ready that no-one else is. Let's look at this one dll - check the version and timestamp on the file scrrun.dll. This should be in your windows/system32 folder. Looking deeper into this, it appears the other developer must have disabled the debug logging in the subroutine where this happens, so I'm almost willing to bet this is your issue. If it's missing, or is otherwise broken you will probably need to look at the installer log (re-run the installer) and see if it's trapping an error while deploying or registering this file. If the file is there and it's version 5.6.0.8820 then try registering it. (start>run>[regsvr32 scrrun.dll][enter]).

Report back if you get anything from registering it other than 'DllRegisterServer .... succeeded' or if this file is missing or of a different version, or if the installer is trapping an error.

    Couldn't find the installer log.
scrrun.dll was there and correct, but tried the dll registration anyhow.

I can now browse the cd/dvd drive.
If I try to play a dvd though, I just end up with a blank screen.

    | To clarify:
    | - Select 'Watch Movies'
    | - Select 'Browse CD/DVD drive'
    | - Select 'DVD Video: video name'
    | - Black screen with 'DVD' on the title bar and controls at bottom
    | - Totally blank screen. No picture, no sound.
    | - Hitting any key on keyboard brings back controls

I can select tracks from an audio cd and play them.
The first time I tried this though, I got a popup error titled 'WinAmp - CD Reader - Error' with the message 'Drive you try to play track from not CD-ROM'. It hasn't happened since.

I still contend that firmware updates should always be done first. Most of the hardware I use was scrounged from rubbish piles and is Win95 era. There's been a heck of a lot of bios updates required for NT/XP support.

As for Antivirus etc, call me paranoid. The PC is connected up to a LAN every so often and being the 'owner' of IT security in A/NZ for a little company that sells Machines to Businesses Internationally I practice what I preach.

I know the title of your thread states that you do have codecs installed but I'm gonna throw this out anyway. Have you installed any DVD Player software such as PowerDVD? ME requires this to play DVD's even though it does not use the program directly within ME but the Media Player does.

Just a thought since you have reinstalled ME and drivers but never mentioned anything about DVD software. I've had similar issues on a test PC until I installed PowerDVD.

Good luck if this doesn't help.

Put it this way, I had the codecs. With all my stuffing around over the last week or so, I think deinstalled them.

Let me work on it some more. I'll report back.

The symptoms you describe now are indicative of missing DVD codecs. You need to be able to play DVDs from within WMP before the same will work within ME.

I noticed your responses regarding firmware updates and antivirus, and I wanted to just qualify my comments for the sake of discussion. I think most CarPC afficionados would agree with me that unless you're using your carputer to check email or browse the web with I.E., running AV software is a net waste of CPU cycles (on a system that is inherently CPU 'challenged'). XP has a built-in firewall that if enabled would present adequate security to the system if your only threat exposure was connecting to a (presumably firewalled / secured) LAN.

Also, while I didn't say updating firmware was a waste of time, if your OS was already seeing all your hardware it was totally pointless in the context of this problem.

<soapbox>Maybe it's my fault, but it still troubles me that folks come here asking for help and in the process insist on arguing semantics with me.</soapbox>
