    | Which I did not intend to do - after all, you're doing this voluntarily.
    | (missed the magic word 'intend')
    | I was trying for 'discuss' rather than 'argue'

The firmware/bios comments are a side-topic and probably should have been moved to another thread.

It'll be a few days before I can investigate further. I definately had the codecs at the start of this whole process (I could play dvd's with WMP) but now I can't, so I've done something stupid.

    We have liftoff!

Decoder clvsd.ax v6.0.0.3402 according to the Windows XP Decoder Checkup Utility (not sure if that's the latest)

Sound is ok, picture's a little jerky. Being a memory-constrained box, I'm not surprised.

    phat_bastard - thanks.

You might experiment with different DVD player apps and see if your playback smooths out. I've had the best luck with PowerDVD 4.0, but YMMV. I may be off-base, but I wouldn't think memory would be as much of a factor with DVD playback as is disk throughput and CPU. A decent graphics adapter doesn't hurt either.
