    Screen shots

    I've been playing around with your software a bit.

    Here is my feedback so far.

    1. The skin looks nice, but they metal effect that is in the background makes it look to cluttered. I took it out and attached is a screenshot of what it looks like with out it.

    2. Screen resolution of 640x480 is really low. Most displays support at least 800x480. You're limiting the space you have to work it and as you add features it will get more difficult to manage.

    We ran into the same problem. Our solution what to make our program run 800x600 in a normal Window. Screens running 800x600 look perfect. Users running 1024x768 see our app but can also see their desktop in the back.

    Another disadvantage of forcing the screen res is when I use alt -tab my screen is set to 640x480 even when I'm out side the app.

    I dont mean to threadjack, but I want to say congratulations to 12vsystems for not being selfish, giving constructive criticism to another company/developer! It shows you are one of the commercial projects that isnt in here to be greedy!

    Yeah, I wonder who I had in mind when I posted about that?

    Maybe he'll get his own forum now.

    Thank you for the input. I have been debating on whether or not to make it so that it runs at either 800x600 or 640x480. In testing with 640x480 I found that all of my other software seems to run ok with no issues. The non touch screen friendly GPS programs like Microsoft Streets and Trips and Delorme packages seem to be a bit easier to use at this resolution. The only issue that I have really found based on screen resolution was my Logitech web cam software cant run below 800 x 600. My test display is a T-View 7 inch monitor that I purchased from ebay at $200.00, so I consider this a fairly poor quality monitor and it seems to look better at 640x480, and it supports all the way up to 1024x768, which is its native resolution.
    I also have tested many of the other Front Ends in this forum and found that many of their functions are difficult to perform smoothly on the road because the buttons or filelists are hard to accurately push as they so small.
    -> I made Mobile Impact with every button and filelist larger so that they were extremely easy to select and the program was easy to operate.

    The form is specifically sized at 640x480 and the controls arent movable. Ive played with some Direct X stuff to resize the graphics and microsoft has some neat code to resize the form and controls at runtime, but I ran into several unrezolvable problems. My graphics technique is as basic as it gets. I didnt use any active x plugins, no direct draw or any other 3rd party stuff, I just used the basic microsoft controls. Here is an example of my code:

    Private Sub Form_Load()
    Picture1 = LoadPicture(App.Path & "\Skins\" & txtskin & "\main_hover.jpg")
    Picture2 = LoadPicture(App.Path & "\Skins\" & txtskin & "\main_pressed.jpg")
    Picture0 = LoadPicture(App.Path & "\Skins\" & txtskin & "\main_normal.jpg")
    PicLogo = LoadPicture(App.Path & "\Skins\" & txtskin & "\logo.jpg")

    Private Sub Image3_MouseDown(Button As Integer, Shift As Integer, X As Single, Y As Single)
    Picture0.PaintPicture Picture2, 4800, 720, 4815, 1335, 4800, 720, 4815, 1335
    End Sub

    Private Sub Image3_MouseMove(Button As Integer, Shift As Integer, X As Single, Y As Single)
    Picture0.Refresh
    Picture0.PaintPicture Picture1, 4800, 720, 4815, 1335, 4800, 720, 4815, 1335
    End Sub

    My main goal was to keep the code as basic and simple as possible. I havent found any code that is simpler than this, and unfortunately it is highly size specific. I have played around with zooming the form as well, but to no success. The code to select one resolution to another would be simple enough, and there is the option to create a whole second set of forms in the higher resolution, but that would entail doubling the code and defeating my goals. I see that you have a 10" monitor from your profile and I can definitely see the problem with a small resolution on it, but on the 7 and 8 inch monitors should look pretty good as I made the default skin highly detailed.

    What would you suggest or do you have any simple graphics techniques that are better that would accomodate both resolutions?

    So your an OC Guy eh what part? Im originally from SoCal myself from the Placentia/Yorba Linda Area and still have family that way.

    RE: Software updates

    Couldn't agree more with you about using streets and trips on a 640x480 instead of 800x600 display but using streets and trips in the car is so nasty. We are about to dump it and go with Mapmonkey or FreeDrive they seem to be a lot more user friendly.

    Most USB camera's capture images at really low resolutions. Out camera app just launchs a 320x240 window that sits on top off all the screens until you close it. Not a great solution but it works for us. Can't think why logitech would need 800x600.

    Graphics are going to be critical to your app. Our first skin was very basic and people on these forums gave me a lot of negitive feedback. (What is interesting is only one person said "hey your graphics suck, fix them and this is going to be a nice package") I worked closely with a graphics designer here and it took us about a week to come up with a new theme.

    As soon as it was released the feedback started to change. We started getting a lot of downloads and people started giving us some kudos.

    Only advice I can offer you is keep the interface looking simple and clean. Look how well the IPOD does cause any non-technical person can use it with out instuctions.

    I also have tested many of the other Front Ends in this forum and found that many of their functions are difficult to perform smoothly on the road because the buttons or filelists are hard to accurately push as they so small.
    I agree, I like the way you have set the button up. I posted a question earlier about the N64 Emulator is there anyway to skin it and make it more touchscreen friendly?

    I am orginally from Canberra, Australia. I've lived in California for the last three years but only moved up to Yorba Linda in Febuary to start doing this full time.

    BTW: The Hummer H2 isn't mine it's a customers car. I wish I could afford something like that.

    More Info

    I will keep that in mind, I may design a skin or two more and bundle it together with the next versions.

    N64 question: Is it skinnable?
    The only part that is skinnable is the mini menu bar on my embedding form. Unfortunately the Nintendo 64 emulator isnt mine, it was written by these guys-> http://www.pj64.net
    Its open source so I downloaded it and I will see about making it more touchscreen friendly, I know its kind of hard to select the games. I will also try to contact them and see if they can make it so the games show up as icons or something. Thanks again.

    re: Emulator

    That would be great. I have looked at a couple ways of integrating games and this seems like the best. At the moment the way it works is good and I can use it on my personal system but it isn't easy enough to use on a touch screen for most people.

    Let me know if you need any help with development or skinning. I would really like to embed the emulator part into our software.

    Here is a link to screen shots of our new skin.

    System Requirements

    I figured that was about the minimum processor that I would run Windows XP on. I developed it in Windows XP, and have tested it on Windows 2000 on a p3 866 and it ran pretty well. You could try it out on a lower Operating system, but you may run into problems as it requires Windows Media Player 9 or better.

    GPS Integration

    I am now currently working on getting iGuidance to be built into Mobile Impact, similar to the way it is integrated into Centrafuse, but with more features and easier useability. I would have worked with Destinator, but they want $50.00 for their SDK and I am not able to find any North American maps of the US and Canada, but I was able to find it for iGuidance, and It is extremely touch screen friendly. Here is a proposed screenshot of it.
