Talking MMC Beta in a few weeks

Just wanted to inform you that we will be releasing a Beta in a few weeks. Among the requested features and bug fixes, we will be releasing some new components.

Web Cam support. We hope to allow multiple feeds. The interface will look like a monitor grid (i.e Multiple Security Monitors stacked next to each other) you will click on one to get a zoomed view.

FM / XM Satellite Radio support. We will be supporting many of the TV/FM tuner devices out there. The deprecated D-Link Radio and our own FM USB Module. The XM component will require a XMPCR device obviously.

The last piece we will be working on which we are taking pretty seriously and might even be going the route of writing our own is GPS. We will keep you posted on this.

We are also looking for suggestions on what IR remotes to support.

Thanks for all the feedback and support.

The route of writing you're own GPS software (if done right) may very well be the best idea. It will be really really nice to have the GPS part integrated with the rest of the software (something all of the other players lack) but will probably take a lot of work. It does seem like you have the skills to do it so good luck! Be prepared for tons of feature requests with the GPS part to take it up to par with the other GPS software. Can't wait!

    Brady,

I know there will be a **** load too That is the best part though. We want to have a system where you are not required to have a ton of third party software to run it. We will allow that, but want a default installation of our own stuff. Little bit by little bit we are getting closer. I feel we have made major strides with all of your feedback. We started this software just three months ago. You can just imagine where it will be in 3 - 6 more months. In our labs we already have ODBII and CAN devices built for the small computers we all use. That will be the next major piece, total control of your car from the computer interface. Then add to that total control from your Pocket PC / PDA device.

The next few months are going to be fun.

    Take care

I just downloaded the software and I'm trying to test this out on my home PC, but it keeps crashing right after the splash screen. I've gone through all the other posts and I haven't seen any fixes that apply to me.

I dont wish to be negative because i'm glad you guys are working on this, but I see this as still in the catch up phase with the other players out there developed by single people, not paid programmers. I keep waiting for something other than the basic mp3/video player, but so far have been very dissapointed. I found the GUI workable with small sets of songs, but I just couldn't get to grips with it for large song lists. The 'hold a button down for a long time' is a major UI dont-do. UI designers have long strived to make interfaces exploratory, meaning if you play with it you can discover for yourself the features and functions. Its not considered intuitive to hold something for a period of time and expect something to happen. The hardware headunit guys only do this sometimes because they dont have the luxury of a full featured screen to interact with the user. I abandoned the MMC after it didnt offer incremental db updates and takes over half and hour to build the database. You have to do that in the background *after* the app starts....

So when will we see some innovation? Something beyond the ability to play music and videos (dvds etc)?

I dont like being negative, but you are a company right, not a guy with a pc sitting there doing it for the fun and praise of peers, like Frodo et al, so I hope this is received in the contructive spirit it is written.

The BMW + iPod (http://www.apple.com/ipod/bmw/) thing is innovation... The 3D GPS (http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS6146656870.html) is innovation... The Prius bluetooth cellphone integration is innovation...

You have to start with something. You can't just expect that their software all of a sudden have an integrated 3D gps system. The basics come first. This is still in the Alpha stage. They are already showing how this software will set itself apart from the rest by making plans to have an internal gps system. I do agree that it doesn't handle large music databases that great (Frodoplayer is amazing at doing this) though....

I have been developing software professionaly for 10 years now. I can take criticism The holdind down state is something that UI designers have come up with when dealing with UI that has no other input mechanism, such as a PDA. When you hold down you get the same functionality as a second mouse button. The problem with these UI's is the screen size. We have to come up with ways to allow a lot of functionality with little space. Same reason Pocket PC / PDA's use this functionality in the UI.

As far as the DB taking 30 minutes... hard to believe. We compared our times to all the major MP3 players and we were 1/3 the time and over a network! How many songs/videos would you say you have? This would help us determine if there is an issue.

Let me clear some other things up. Hybrid is a self funded company by a few guys. They are friends of mine and I have agreed to work for free to develop this software for the company, so that maybe one day we can all do this fulltime. This industry is our passion and dream (Import Tuning, Car Audio, etc). So I do set at home and work on this in my spare time.

I know it has a lot of work to be done and I am doing my best. I have been busting my tail for 3 months straight on this software. It will get there over time trust me. It will get much better and accomplishing tasks. We will add some cool innovative things. There are plenty of other things to come. I have only developed for 3 months and have not even released a 1.0 version yet. Once we have 1 - 2 years of development, it will be much better .

I wish I could work on it fulltime and we were funded where I could hire other developers, then we would really be cranking some stuff out, but that is not the case for now.

All I can say is I am working hard at getting everything that has been requested in there the best I can...

I hope I do not let anyone down. I think it can be a worthy package to use in time.

Thanks for the comments. It is always appreciated.

    Take care,
    Ben

What makes the huge difference in this case? The filtering using the OSK?

Will the webcam support a record feature? I don't really care about compression support. I can do that at home after I get back from recording some "fun" driving. Also, the hint of CAN support and relay control is O so appealing. Have you decided on how this external hardware will connect to the carputer? Parallel, Serial, USB, or possibly user selected.

Also, I keep all my car apps on a CD so that if there is ever a problem I have everything together. But just the thought of having one exe to install simplifies many things. The idea keeps coming up that I single front end that supports multiple plugins would be a welcomed program. I see your software having everything you need with an added driver to support “Enter Generic Name” device. Keep this project rolling and I’m sure you will build your own following here on MP3Car.
