You can set it up to come on automatically when it detects 12 volts on the line, so you can connect it to the accessory wire.

I have the 3 wires connected as should be (+, -, & accy) and the jumper is set to ignition but the unit still only powers on when it detects a signal from a computer. Any other ideas. Thanks to all that replied.
P.S. Bugbyte, i just checked out your 101 video. Nice work.
I am trying to get the P5USB to come on when the vehicle comes on with out having a computer connected to it.
You could probably feed it 5V on the upstream USB port to get it to power the downstream ports. Although I haven't tried it.
I'm curious about the use case scenario, what kind of device(s) are you trying to power before the PC does?
Or does that mean the hub is not going to be connected to a computer even after the vehicle comes ON? Interesting.....with out having a coomputer connected to it.
Anyway, it needs to sense 5V current on the upstream USB port to power the downstream ports. The draw is very minimal (few mA).
Yeah Ecog it was a good idea, I tried that first by plugging the upstream cable into a lighter to usb adapter. No luck though. I am not trying to get items to power before the computer, i am sorry i was not clear. I dont always take the time to pull the laptop out for the shorter trips (hour or less) but it would be nice if I could use the P5USB to power the TomTom, cell phone (usb), and BT and get rid of the lighter adapters. Not a big deal either way, just figured I could save some room.
Thanks
Soooo... anyone know whats supposed to be here? lol
I noticed (at the car meet of all places) i started getting random disconnects from devices plugged into the P5USB. Today i decided to remove it from my car to see if i could find the problem and this is how i found it. I did test the advertised reverse polarity protection as a part of my review soon after i got it a few months ago, but the problem with the disconnects just recently started. Any ideas?

Zzzzt!! Kapow! Was there a fuse in that location? But then I don't think it would work, would it?
I "accidentally" tested the reverse polarity on my test unit for about 10 hours on the bench one day. Worked like a charm!
BTW, that's not your home phone number in the photo, is it?
