Gary, aka chunkyks from the mp3car forums talks about his experience with the sheeva plug and his OBD 2 GPS logging software. He received the plug from mp3Car and submitting his application which ended up winning an award and thus a trip to CES.

I actually do have a 3G connection on my plug. It's a verizon USB stick. I got it working with wvdial after some serious screwing. Works great. Only issue is that verizon drops an idle connection after 5 minutes, so I just wrote a script to have it ping google every 4 minutes. I also wrote another to make sure the connection restarts if it is lost.

I setup a wifi access point in my car by hooking a linksys "router" into the sheeva's ethernet port and turning off the DHCP and routing servers on the router. Then I setup the plug as a DHCP server, DNS server, and a gateway.

I have some c# code I wrote over the summer that talks with NetworkManager to turn on/off the gsm connection. If that interests you I can share. You may not want to run mono on your plug though. The crappy part will be setting up the initial connection via commandline. There is a cli interface for network manager now, so that shouldn't be too difficult. You have to do the same for proximity to work with wifi connections to APs as well...

I would have been interested in August haha. Right now my python code is working great and what I've learned about the 3g connection is don't f*** with it. I've screwed that up a few too many times. Thanks for the offer though.
