How do those a/c vents work? Do you have any ducting to redirect the flow?
Also, this seems to replace the hazard lights. Did you eliminate that button completely or did you put it somewhere else?
The vents work reasonably well in my usage thus far. Are they like the stock vents? No, but the air still flows out.
I moved the hazard button to one of the pop outs on the left side of the steering column. Took me about 2 minutes to pop off the dash piece, 15 minutes to make the extending harness (8 wires, 18 AWG, about 3.5'), and then another 15 soldering it back up together. You have to file down the little nub on the pop out, but even I felt comfortable doing that... I'll grab some pics and throw them up here.
Dash piece, comes out w/ 3 screws and 3 snaps. I've mounted in my RSW250 (volume control knob) with superglue. Also check out how I opened up one of the holes for the Hazard Button.
Buttons installed. Sexy.
Sorry for the brightness, but you can see how I extended the cables.

How does the audio work? Through the dock connector to a deck with a line in? Or bluetooth audio?
Justin Riley has fabricated a really well finished bolt-in kit for the iPad. (wifi or 3g). This particular kit fits into the 2005-2007 Subaru Impreza/WRX and STi. (They all have the same dash).
This bolt-in kit is a 1:1 replacement for the stock dash. Basically just pop out the old one, and put this in there. It has protection for the iPad, and when used with the Apple iPad Dock will charge and deliver audio. (via the 3.5mm cable)
This kit for the Subaru series will be available on the mp3Car Store soon.
Sorry I missed this earlier. I decided to use the Apple iPad Dock. Rather than fiddle around with trying to get a connector in the right place, or plug and unplug something, this is a component that we know works, is readily available, and is more versatile than just a standard plug.
That said, out of the back you have two options:
1) Stereo out. You can pull your audio from the 3.5mm jack. This is what I did.
2) 30-pin connector. SoundMan has managed to get optical audio out through the 30 pin connector, which is fantastic. It takes a little bit more work/a few more components, but if you're interested in optical quality audio, it's there too.
Of course, if you use the 30 pin connector to pull audio, you cannot use it to supply power to the iPad, which is a feature I wanted to keep open. Honestly, I haven't hooked up the charging element yet because the iPad has SUCH a good battery life that I don't want to put that kinda strain on the battery and potentially reduce it's long term life.
Landscape view was (unfortunately) a casualty that had to happen. The geometry of the Impreza is such where there's not enough room to go landscape. You can do it if you bring the iPad forward towards the driver (ala the Scosche guys), but then you sacrifice appearance. The only app I want to run landscape is MLB At Bat 2010 when I'm listening to my Red Sox broadcasts. That's a price I'm willing to pay for an OEM-style appearance.
Thanks for your interest and keep checking back here for release date information!
Awesome job, Justin!
I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting any information on how to pick this up. This is exactly what I have been looking for. An excuse to replace my chipped/scraped bezel due to old attempts at CarPC setups AND get an ipad! haha.
Let me know when they are ready to ship. I'll be on it same day!
