    Exclamation Flaming New Forum Users

[EDIT: This thread was originally started in the Road Runner forums, and then moved here. In the first 15 or so posts there are quite a few Road Runner references]

OK, I may get flamed for this myself! But.... here goes.

Over the past few days it seems the "flaming" has gotten increasingly bad when someone new asks a question. If you look at the top few posts right now, there is a "You should have searched" in each and every one of them. This is a pretty non productive post, and just another way of saying: "I know more than you do, and I'm not telling you".

It leaves a bad impression for this great community for a new user each and every time!

It's actually better not to reply at all, than to post something like that. For one, it won't offend anyone, and two, if there are no answers they will probably have to figure out how to find the answer they seek on their own

AND YES! I have also told people to search, but done in a way to help point them on what to search for and what to look for to fix a problem.

Hell, in one somewhat recent post, a questions was asked, and then answered by someone the same day. The next day a comment about the question was posted. "if you would have searched....." PAST tense! This just took a question, a good answer, and then left a bad taste in the mouth as the last post in that thread.

This is a great community, and yes, there are some basic, simple and yea, sometimes stupid questions asked. But to someone new to the forums, I find it is better to use sugar instead of vinegar, to coin an old phrase.

    With a questions something like:
"HELP!!!! I have a white box around the logo on my skin. How do I fix it?"

Can be answered one of 2 ways:

    1) "For God sake use the search feature you moron!

    -OR-

    2) "Thats generally related to a flash version problem. Try a search on the forums for "White Box" or "Flash Version". That should give you some ideas on how to fix it. There are also some tips on fixing this in the FAQ at the top of the forums".

Even though the second one also says to search, it is done in a much nicer way, and is not going to offend anyone or scare them off from asking anything else in the future, and leave them with a good impression of the forums in general.

One of my very first posts, in the MP3Car forums, was a question on how to get the weather to work (Ahhhh the good ole days! hahaha) Luckily someone was nice, and gave me some good advice, and I stuck around, became active on the forums, learned, started being able to answer questions others had, and eventually created and released a skin of my own. If someone would have bit my head off for asking that back then, I may have said screw it! I don't need this crap, and never came back.

So if someone asks a question, And you feel so inclined to respond, Make it a good response! Sure you can tell them to search, but help them with the search term, a link, what to look for..... something. If you can't reply with a good response, just roll your eyes, and click your back button to read the rest of the new posts

Each and every single one of us had our very first post in the forums, and in most cases it was a question, that probably many others though was a stupid question at the time

I agree, as well as anyone now using your awesome skin. I might try actually using it for a few days and see if I like the "IN CAR" feel of it.

You can look at this way, you could be pushing away another potential skin designer, you never know!

Just to put the record straight !
In my post in the other thread which started all this off. Feature Request: Volume increasing with speed
I was not refering to anyone in particular, and certainly not you Blue ZX3.

It's just that I've been spending some time pursuing Destinator6 for RR, in a site in my own country, Digital-car.co.uk, also used by some of the other mp3car.com members, and it saddened me to see people saying they had "defected" because of the way they had been treated on this site.

The way I see it, we are all CarPC enthusiasts and we should be happy to have a foot in a number of these related sites and not feel excluded because of the treatment received. That way, we ALL benefit from the knowledge and help of each other.

Wow, I had no idea that this was a larger problem that I thought. I visited the UK site linked above, and copied a couple posts to show the general attitude of our forums (Names all withheld of course)

Here are a couple posts I found on the site:

Anyway, that's my first big post out of the way. I may ask a few questions along the way, but I know where the search button is (maybe I'd be welcome on MP3car now...LOL! )
I say just go there [MP3Car], get the info you need, come here and talk about it/discuss it etc.
There's a reason this site exists - and it's because the people who run MP3Car had ****ed a lot of people off.
I think the MP3Car community is generally a great group of people, sharing ideas, scripts, code, tips and tricks and so much more. Is this really the way we all want the site to be known as?

Hmm, the third post is the only one that I would view as being openly antagonistic to mp3car.com. I've been on this site for five years now. I had no background whatsoever in computers or technical matters when I started; however, I did have an interest in learning and making a computer work in my car. Now, five years later, due to the help of others and my own research, I've learned enough that I can, to some extent, help others with their projects and problems. I can honestly say that even at the beginning when I was asking what were probably incredibly stupid questions that had been asked and answered many times, I never received a response that was anything other than helpful or respectful.

You can find digital car here = http://www.digital-car.co.uk/

Its true that the search smiley is a bit over used,I've been a member on both sites for some time now and have learned a lot from both.

There does seem to be a growing sentament that its hard to get help here though and in a lot of cases it seems some people post solely to increase their post count.

As the home of RR i consider it a privelage to be a member here and do whatever i can to help out,we were all noobs once.

I completely agree with john on this one.. THe flaming has got to stop. Yes sometimes if you search for hours you will find what you need, but wow, IF you search google you can eventually find the answer to anything. The reason for a message forum is so that a person can ask and someone will hopefully be polite enough to answer. Just because we have a few multi year veterans here does not give them the right to bash new comers.
It is time for use to pull our heads out of our rectal evacuation units and continue this forum how it was. Welcoming and open to speek freely.
It has gotten so bad that a lot of people are afraid to ask questions you can see it in there post they usually start like "I know I could search and I did, but I could not find this...." then the reply by some jackass will be similar to this "Did you look at this link or this link or this link. I found this in a quick search in about 5 minutes" Then the next reply will be "Sorry, that is not really what I want, can someone please help".
Lets stop the madness and continue a welcoming environment it is much easier just to answer the friggin questions.
