Unfortunately, even the forums aren't free -- It is the revenue from the mp3car.com store that pays for the server and the bandwidth. So if we happen to be a few dollars more than a competitor, you should just consider that your donation to keep the forums up and running. Now, if we're more than just a few dollars above our competitors, it likely means that we've simply been too busy to update the store, and in those cases you should let us know and we'll consider adjusting prices. We don't play price-matching games, but we're not out to gouge anyone either.

As far as I'm concerned, knowledge belongs to the world. I'll donate, but I refuse to pay up to 200 dollars for decent software.

Piracy is bad m'kay...I do agree that paying outrages prices for mediocre software is not a great thing. However, there are plenty of free alternatives going around if you're willing to learn. For instance, I don' feel like paying $150+ for WinXP x64, so I'm thinking of making the switch to Linux. The best way to do something about software prices is to not buy it & not priate it either...just my opinion

Bahhaha! That's comical. Ever run a business, friend? Oh, shoot, we're making way more money now, we should lower our prices. AS IF! Software vendors just like any other vendors are out there to make as much money as possible!

I say, if you're really enjoying the software (ie you play the whole game, use the OS, use the graphics program for work, etc), then you should rightfully pay for it, at whatever price the company is asking.

If you just want to check it out and see what its about, then download away and try it. Just NEVER sell something you didn't pay for!

Answer....p2p, then uninstall when no longer required.

To buy all the software required for my course would cost more than the entire years student loan.

Agreed though no-one should profit from stuff d/l'd from these sources.

I'm sure EVERYONE here has used an illegal copy of windows or copied a friends disc here & there.... myself included, but to build a network designed around stealing on a large scale just for the sake of stealing & distributing it to as many as you possibally can can't be right either... that's nothing but organized crime really...

1 on 1 borrowing & sharing is not the same thing....

this is one of the big problems in todays digital age.... trying to protect what you own & not have it ripped off...... more & more you will see stuff like MS, forcing you to register & validate to prevent theft...

who ever don't think theft comes into play when it comes to retail prices? think again.....

software companys have overhead... staff.... equiptment..... & plenty of other expenses..... if a software developer builds something that sells & makes them a fourtune, GOOD FOR THEM.... for every one that does I'm sure there are 10 that don't.... to think it's ok to steal from them because there making a fortune isn't right....

most people don't feel like there stealing if it's just software & not a tangiable item, but it's still stealing, mercedes benz makes a fourtune, but it's not ok to just go take one off the lot because of it, & because you can't afford it....

I do work for free. I am a musician who heavily supports p2p. Music as a product is the same as every other downloadable product.

It has a few different ways it makes money; 1. Product sales (the cd, a software program, a dvd), 2. Concerts, theatre movies, and mass use (like if the product is good enough for someone to want to use many many copies for a business or something) 3. Sponsers, donations, 4. Merchandise 5. a sequal.

Now, as far as the product goes, if it is offered for free or nearly free, that's just cheap advertisement, and the best form of advertisement, word of mouth. With a free product you are going to ALWAYS have a much larger audience. If that product is good enough 2-5 make much more money. As far as software goes, if it's a small program, the more you charge is almost directly porportional to how many people will buy it, if it's free, more people will get it, higher % of donations, and if the program stays on top of the competition, the audience will continue to grow. Companies may start to recognize it, and donations will happen more often. How about charge for a service, if I want something added to the program, charge a fee. Or if it's something like virus protection that needs to be constantly updated, that's fine, charge for constant updates.

They aren't going to stop piracy, it will just get worse. You can't stop the snow, but you can make it more enjoyable. They are spending far too much money trying to stop the best advertising they've ever had. Keep the arguments coming. I got an answer for all of them. Good topic though, needs to be talked about, especially since we are in a forum titled mp3car. More than half the people on this site illegally download music. So this should be an interesting topic.

Edit: I would also like to add that for the moment, if i do enjoy a cd/program/movie, I will buy it to support the genius' that came up with it. But even more than that, I'll be the one in the front of the line at the concert or buying movie tix in advance. I don't get as excited about programs but I'm still there for the update if I enjoy it enough.

Edit: Yes if it a tangiable item then they are selling you something that cost them money. metal, glass, plastics all cost money and for the most part that is what you are paying for. People buy mercedes for the name, the look, the feel, the performance. Designing all that cost money but mercedes didn't just come out of the woodwork with a car and ask tons of money for it, they started from the very beginning. If you want to release a product, I have no problems paying you for a cd, a manual, any other things I can feel with my hands. All the design that they spent so much time on is open for you to view, in fact they take pride in it, and that's why alot of people love mercedes, because they see the work thats gone into it and what a high quality product it is. And if you want to try and make a mercedes, I don't think they will care. I can't make a copy of the car and give it to my friend, if I did I would go broke very fast. It is not the same so comparing them is pointless. Anything that mercedes has to offer that can be downloaded they offer for free.

Edit: Btw, Linux made millions of dollars without selling their product. Do you think they would be nearly as popular had they had charged even half what windows charges? If they had we would all be saying "Who's Linux?"

Backing up CD's to MP3 format is perfectly legal, as long as you don't have both forms of media in use at the same time

Also you are allowed to make a backup ISO of any software CD you like. Its distro thats illegal, not copying!

so rent, programmers salarys, computers, electricity, disc's, printing, r&d, advertizing... etc... cost the developers nothing???

what you are talking about are different marketing stratagys... while some will choose to give something away to gain elsware, others will use the stratagy of direct sales.... who are you to decide that they shouldn't sell it.... you can choose to not buy it, but to say they shouldn't sell it, they should just give it to you???? why????? because you say so??????
