    You're correct.
However, it is also sometimes worthwhile to nudge (or shove, as the case may be) a n00b into the search tool or the FAQs or the other informational resources available.
There are those individuals who, despite presenting the same information multiple ways in different language will simply not get it. The only way they will get it is to learn for themselves.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Why not answer the 'common' questions in sticky threads in a noobs area, and while you're at it, why not make noobs with posts under say 50 only able to reply. They can browse the other threads, but can't create new ones until the 50.

I don't think that'd stop any of them, then they'd just go resurrecting old threads to ask related (or worse, unrelated) questions... even more than they already do quite often
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

Well, they already exist, in the FAQ Emporium.

Perhaps the best thing would be to actually link the FAQ link in the top toolbar to the actual FAQs, instead of to some silly FAQ that really doesn't help anyone.

Be that as it may, the FAQs and Stickies are there, they just have to read them.

there already are stickies for the noob most asked questions in the FAQ section. Im not sure if it was red, but im pretty sure it was, made alot of nice helpful posts for noobs explaining pretty much all the basics. If i remember correctly theres a sticky on the top of newbie forum that says "new to car pc's start here", at the very top. most noobs bypass that and ask a question that can be found by reading that.

I dont bash people that try or say hey, im think this might be it but im not sure. that kinda thing. people that are actually trying i have no problem with.

its the people that sign up and then ask, hey im new, what do i need to buy?

seriously cant you see the difference. the 1st guy, wants to learn and wants to do this project. in the end he will be self sufficent and if he has a problem hell be able to trouble shoot to an extent or know how to ask or search to get what he needs. Person number 2 just wants you to tell him the answer without trying or even looking. which means the next time he has a problem instead of trying to figure it out, hell ask another question without trying or looking. For the most part you become his free tech support.

If you want me to answer every question without telling people to do their own homework. fine. My company charges 172/hr. Ill answer any question you can throw at me with a smile on my face, ill even walk you through whatever you want step by step as long as the meters running. But since your not paying me any fees and im here helping out, I expect you to do a little homework and at least care somewhat about your own system that your putting in your car.

    No really I wasnt.

Not just because i have a degree in computers and an engineering background. I learned how to pick up a manual long ago. the differnece is, before I bother anybody for anything, I try to find the answers on my own. Not specifically limited to this forum. If there is something I dont comprehend, Im not limited to the search from just this forum either. There are places like yahoo, google, ask etc that can also be searched. just because this is a forum for putting a pc in your car, its really no different then any pc, except for the application in which its being used.

I dont mind helping people find the information there looking for, but it would be nice if they just tried to find the answer first. its not every noob that does it but just look thru some of the posts in there that scream Help me do this, I want it now but i didnt bother to give a **** to figure it out.

not all noobs are really noobs, in my book the only real noobs, are the ones that dont try and want someone to do it for them.

Yup... and that was in the day of one or two potential DC to DC solutions that you had to build your self or use an inverter.

I'm a noob in many respects. I recently wanted some answers about alternators. I tried to fish around and coudln't find jack 'cos I'm not clued up enough for the right search terms. so I was very tempted to just ask, and given that I've helped people in the past, I'm sure I'd get answers. and I'm also sure that noob bullies wouldn't hack at me, 'cos I've kinda gained respect (or maybe I just think too highly and ascended of myself ). so what of that?

I'm more coming around to the idea of "help or look away". ironic, since I stareted this thread really!

If you go down to the woods today, You're sure of
One of my main bug bears is when I take the words (or a selection of words in the order they have been typed) that a poster (n00b or otherwise) has typed, and put them in the search box and they come up with a list of threads that will help them.

IE if they had type their post into the search engine instead of the post they would have got their answers.
