I just think its funny that my thread got closed because members started there and talked about messing with the gerbil forum and that was looked down upon. But the bad ideas thread was about going out in real life and harming/hurting people. So its bad to **** around over the internet with another forum, but its ok for me to throw a napalm molotov cocktail at someone?

Now, I'm considering closing this thread but want some feedback from you all about it before I do anything.

The reason for closing it is that it doesn't have a very focused topic. It's an open ended thread that veers from here to there. Most threads, even in OT have a topic and a few people post on it, it lives a short life, then the posts die out because most everyone who is inclined to say anything have already had their say.

Tidder's Suncrap Whoring Thread is in the same vein.

    What do you all think?
Do you think everyone who posted here or My Thread will just go away? I think its better to allow us a thread so we can discuss topics we feel like discussing at that particular moment. Otherwise, we'll all turn into LGBR style OT users. Useless threads about nothing, constantly being started.
The great thing about My Thread was you could go in and say something that doesn't warrant its own thread being started.
As nice as it is to be asked if we want our threads closed () what kind of answer do you expect? Do whatever the hell you'd like and we'll do the same.

    Hey Spag

I had a hand in it too and admit it wasn't the most sensible thing to do. I guess at the time it was a (naughty) way to relieve some of the recent tensions, just the wrong forum to talk about it.

    Apologies from me too.

You've complained that nobody listens and that we act unilaterally. I asked for feedback about what to do with threads that are not generally centered around a particular topic. Here's why I'm asking.

Topics that are in the LCD or Power Supply or FAQ thread get closed or the poster is told to get back on topic if they're wandering off. That's how a thread works. Its a thread of conversation between users on a particular topic. Before you produce a list of threads from this forum that wander like a drunken sailor, don't. I already know they're out there.

Off topic posts are called off topic because they rarely have anything to do with car computing. But they do have a topic. New Zealand people, Jokes, Funny Videos, Digital Voice Recorders, etc. Off topic is the place to post these because they don't belong in the main forums. The GPS forum just isn't the place to ask how many people are Kiwis.

It's a place for topics that are off topic, the topic being car computing. It doesn't make sense to me to have a thread there that is a nearly stream of conciousness chat-room style conversation. At least, not on a car-pc forum. There's rarely a point to a lot of the OT threads but there's even less of a point to an OT thread with no topic at all. That's a chat-room.

I'm not making a judgement about the value of the conversation, the friendship, or whether some topic is more important than another. I just don't see how it fits into the mp3car OT forum. If the answer is that there would be dozens and dozens of off topic threads started, then I'd question whether the OP's are all that interested in car computing.

If it would keep threads from being gummed up by people making off-topic remarks in those threads, then maybe they ought to concentrate on staying on topic or not making those remarks.

I'm all for a little fun and games, and I think I'm pretty relaxed about letting others go on as well, so I'm not talking about sucking all the air out of the room with some strict moderation about what is or isn't on topic. I just don't see how threads with no topic fit in to a forum on car computing.

Well, if you are asking for my opinion, then here it is: Whether you understand it or not, like it or not, or want to participate in it or not, doesn't really matter. What matters is that there are people here, people that are part of this carPC world, people that use carPC's on a daily basis, people that have generously contributed thier time in other parts of the forums helping build the hobby of car computing to what it is today, and people that have bought things from Ziplocks store and reccommended others do the same, and they like, understand, and want to participate in a thread that is not of a single topic but relating to all topics. A place where they can talk, vent, change topics on a whim, and not get in the way of the rest of the forum.
Just because you don't see the point in something doesn't mean it should be censored. I always thought it was funny when people would go in to My Thread and complain about its existence. No one is making anyone else read it. Its like going to a concert and complaining about loud music.

    Think of it like this.

Assume the Forum is like a 24/7 ongoing convention. Convention for what? doesn't really matter. There will be loads of break out rooms for discussing different categories related to the subject area of the convention. However there will be a bar when the visitors will take a break from the main subject matter and just hang with others talking about whatever comes to mind, changing subjects whenever the mood dictates.

Off Topic is that bar. And My Thread made sure the most raucous members kept the rowdy behaviour in one small corner of that bar.

the real truth is, I guess they don't..... you are correct, it's being used more like a chat than a thread with a topic...., but it is being done by members here, & not n00bs, but mostly long standing members.... it's kind of cool up until now that there is a place for this sort of chatter,

mp3car has been gracious enough to allow this, & not have issue with it.... up until recently it seems that there is a bit more "house cleaning" going on.... I guess there's nothing wrong with that certainly, & if mp3car changed it's policies, & decided that this just wasn't acceptable, then I guess it/you/they have every right to.... but don't expect there to not be a feeling of loss.... like something has been taken away, because up until now it has been there....

I think it promotes users, & makes the place feel like home to many, I don't see much drawbacks either, stupid stunts excluded of course...

I really initially never frequented ot, I have over 3,500 posts here in the few years I've been here & I can promise you that almost all of them have been on topic & usually long drawn out posts detailing stuff that I'd like to share or discuss with others about the one hobby I have that I can't talk to many "normal" people about....

I too have strayed into off topic, I feel that I have "friends" there, sure I don't know them & they don't know me, but for the most part, even for the amount of jerking off that goes on, most are respectable & genuine people.. there is a comradery built up, & it's cool to be able to bull**** with some guy in london, another in australia, & another in singapore, & then be able to also talk to local guys I know in person as well.... the common denominator? all carpc geeks....

I think the overall "theme" if you will, is freindship, & an outlet..... I guess ot doesn't do much for the owners of the site, except make it a more friendly place.... there are less arguments & flaming in ot than there is in other areas of the board, & I don't see it as a bad thing that mp3car graciously hosts this meeting place for the geeks that are involved... I think every long time member eventually finds ot & enjoys it to a certain extent... yeah, it's pointless, & yeah, it may have nothing to do with carpc's, but it is a welcome addition that would suck to loose... maybe the majority would never miss it, but there are plenty who will....

so, what really is the problem with it? is it server space? is it a degrading image perceived? is it what?... if I had a forum I would welcome guys who wanted to spend a big part of there day on my forums, ot or not...

ot is a good place for everything that doesn't fit in any of the normal catagories, including useless banter... that's just the way it is....

They fit in because this place is a central point where we all meet. If it weren't for OT we wouldn't have made as many friends who share the same interest and on a personal note I wouldn't have met carpc enthusiasts in NY last year. An OT thread without a rigid topic allows likeminded people to talk about things that aren't related to carpc's where it would not be possible to on other forums that might suit the individuals themselves.

Why every thread has to have a defined topic is beyond me. Life is just not that rigid and I find it surprising that you seem to think free minded individuals should be herded into or conditioned to stick to a predefined format. This is a hobby for most of us not a shop stall that we have to keep neat and tidy. A little random chat breaks the monotony not just of this site but sometimes our lives in general.

The culture here has changed recently and in my view this is being driven by mp3car and its admin and mods. There seems to be a bit of cleansing going on and this place has become more sterile. Frodo struck a good balance when he was here and since his departure the attitude of those 'in charge' has changed. Not good in my view.

Still, its good to talk with you BB and get you guys side of it
