Thread: How many Australian mp3Cars are there out there?

Hey peoples, newbie here from Melbourne!

Djmickyg got me hooked on the idea of a carpc ages ago, so I decided to finally bite the bullet and start a setup for my 1991 ST185 Celica GT-Four Group A.

So far, I've got a Sempron 3300+, AMD K8V-VM all in-one board, seagate 160gb SATA HDD, and waiting on an M2-ATX Psu to arrive. I'll be putting a motorised ebay touchscreen in my dash, will get some pictures of it up soon!

To my knowledge there are still no Australian maps for Streetdeck.

Short Version:
- Another Aussie here (Melbourne, Australia)
- CarPC is at "Research & Planning" stage.

Long Version:
Basically, I wanted a Ford Territory for about 18 months now, so I joined the FordForums to read up on the car and do my homework. Anyway, I've recently purchased a Ford Territory Ghia (below):



About 8 months ago, I was reading the AFF and found a thread about a "potential" carputer - they linked to mp3car.com. I tell you what, I've been lurking / reading / researching / and just plain hooked on this forum ever since. The knowledge to be gained by reading these forums is difficult to fathom.

So briefly, I pretty keen to get a CarPC happening, but to be honest, I'm also pretty well *****scared of some of what's required.

I had hoped that my CarPC might happen sometime in 2007, but that got a serious kick-start today as I've just purchased some components (Via Epia M/B, RAM, Opus PSU, etc).

When things start physically happening I'll definitely fire up a worklog thread and link to it here.

Pumped to see so many Aussies out there, and definitely hoping to draw on some of your experience when I get cracking.

Are you going to run it through the factory ICC or use an aftermarket screen?

Pretty sure I recognize your handle from the AFF's as well. I've seen some of your threads over there about carputer, etc.

Whilst your question seems pretty simple, I'm not convinced I know the answer to it yet. I've read with interest how some have used an Arcade Graphics Card to make it all happen with the factory ICC. Having said that, the touchscreen approach is very tempting albeit the fabrication side is quite daunting for this newbie.

At this point, I'm prepared to stay in DreamLand and set my targets high. I have no idea how possible it will be, but my ideal setup might resemble:

1) Carputer under drivers seat (I know this isn't advised and I'm prepared to take numerous precautions. Ironically, for such a big car, there's very little "inconspicuous" space in my 7-Seater Territory). Mind you I'd be quite happy to entertain other suggestions (that my wife will acept) should they be forthcoming.

2) Rear headrest monitors (x2) so the kids can watch "The Wiggles" or "Toy Story" or whatever else is the flavour of the day.

3) Touchscreen monitor in the dash where the current ICC is placed.

4) The existing dash (from ICC down) is moved downward, absorbing some of the free space at the bottom.

So if I consider the dream setup, then the answer to your question is "both". Ideally I'd like to keep the existing ICC with all it's functionality, and add a touchscreen for the new CarPC.
